Hi there - any one go to the UK for Gap Year? These are two groups that organize gap studies at Oxford. It’s expensive. But sounds interesting. If anyone has gone can they post experience and curriculum? They provide one on one tutoring - my son is interested in advanced math. Please post ASAP, we’re thinking of Sept 2015 admit…gulp. $$
Just to be sure that you are clear: neither of these organizations have any association with Oxford except that 1) they are based in the town of Oxford; 2) in the summer they rent accommodation from Oxford colleges and 3) they teach their courses using the ‘tutorial’ format.
So, when you are deciding whether or not to do this program, ask yourself: if everything about this program was 100% the same, except that the word “Oxford” was replaced with (say) Durham (another picturesque English town with a respected university), would you still want to do it?
Update - my son went to Oxford Tutorial College for his gap year to study Maths and Physics. Would I recommend it? Not if your son is looking to push himself in these subjects. But if you want a safe international experience, one-on-one tutoring, a dorm experience for a lot of money, then go. The dean is caring and involved. It’s expensive. But you have access to Oxford lectures and the Oxford Union. That is worth it.
If you think it will give you an edge in Ivy admission, it won’t.
Never thought that - just was looking for interesting gap year experience for a kid who loves math and needed to get away from home.
