Campus renovations

One potential college is planning significant renovations in the area of study for my student. It would occur at least 3 of the 4 years of attendance. Has anyone attended a school during such a renovation? Reports say it should not impact learning. Thoughts?

Do you mean that they are renovating or constructing new buildings? It can be exciting to see that happen in your department. I wouldn’t worry about it impacting learning. People learn to adapt.

What’s the area of study?

If it’s something that involves specialized equipment, such as high-tech laboratories, there might be some inconvenience. But if it doesn’t, it just means that classes and professors’ offices will be moved to different locations temporarily.

Pretty much all campuses have some construction going on every year. People manage.

This would not be one of the things I’d worry about in choosing a college. In fact the college’s commitment to building new facilities is excellent proof that it is committed to improving the program. Also, it’s not as much the facilities as the faculty and the curriculum that makes a college great. In short, this is a GOOD signal about the college.

I worked at serval universities where buildings and roads were under construction. There were some inconveniences such as using particular entrances or detours on sidewalks and roadways. No particular component of buildings except for the interior like classrooms and office. Construction occurs during regular work hours and can be fun to watch. Annoying construction was minimal.

The only time it did influence D’s decision somewhat was a smaller private not big in STEM adding a new STEM building and really upping their game. Sounds great, but like you, it wasn’t finishing until spring of her senior year and the faculty coordinator for the project was the head of the very small department/major she would have been part of - and he was a big reason for attending. We felt his time would be too divided and focused on growing not only a building, but an entire department academically and administratively. And she was going to miss all the new cool stuff. For her it was better to go to a school that was already established and had the physical amenities for her STEM major.

My college is currently in the midst of a two year remodel to the student union building. It’s kinda annoying just cause there’s not a lot of places to eat. Everything important got relocated.

Beware of the campus with no construction or rehab going on…

Good sign that the school is investing in the program.

It is the math and science portions of the school. Reading it looks like they will be moved to trailers. Unless I am reading it wrong. It sounds like most think this is a good sign so keeping with the plan for now.
