Campus Safety? 1/22 visit ?

Colorado mom - thank you for your posts! My junior daughter is a violinist and is considering Case too. She’s not sure she wants to major in music but having CIM at CWRU’s doorstep is a huge plus. We checked out University of Rochester and Eastman which are considered the same institution but Eastman is a good 10 minute drive from Uof R campus.
I attended the dental school there in the 80’s and I survived.
Campus security is a concern for me because I remember it was not the safest neighborhood back then. My first year I lived in a dorm and heard a gunshot! Wow, that was an experience for a small town girl.

Suzukimomto2 - Since your daughter is still a junior, think about checking out summer programs. I think I saw that Case offers some.

My son loves his music, but he most definitely does NOT want to major in it, and probably not minor either. He just wants it for fun and maybe a few classes. Just a warning from watching other families (and reading a few CC post) - if she decides she wants to major in music or any performing arts, the college search process becomes a whole different ballgame with auditions etc.

Thanks for the tip on summer programs. My daughter is leaning toward music education and we’ve already started preparing for the audition process with her violin teacher. Our trip in February will introduce us to the music programs and the teachers.

Euclid has never bothered me, I mean, great crosswalks (and during busy times when a billion students want to cross a policeman to orchestra crossings), but then again, I was never the type that HAD to have very quiet more rural campuses (like UVA or something).

About safety: one thing Case has DRASTICALLY improved this year is safe ride. This semester I have not walked home after 8PM once (well, except when I pulled an all-nighter and that was more walking home the next morning, but that’s beside the point). Basically, you call SafeRide and usually within 5-10 a minivan will come to give you a ride to anywhere on campus (or even if it’s within 1mile ish of campus).

Oh, and I’m pretty sure the walk from Northside is pretty long, I’m a pretty fast walker but I you wouldn’t have to walk all that slowly to make it 20 min. Getting a bike was the best investment I’ve ever made at Case (although I obviously can’t use it in snow). 1) It makes the quad an easy 5 min away from the Northside dorms and 2) if you are worried about safety, I’ve never heard of anyone getting mugged on a bike :)

Casegirl - Good points, thanks. I don’t think he minded the Euclid crossing as much as the idea of it feeling like two separated campuses. It’s not enough of a problem to take Case “off the list”. All schools have pros/cons. (Northeastern in Boston, another school on his list, has a much bigger street separating some of the dorms from main campus. You have to watch for cars and cross “the T” track. But it has the tradeoff of a strong co-op program and awesome transportation options from campus to all corners of Boston.) If he is offerred an enticing Case scholarship, I think another visit would help him learn more.

Actually public transportation to get downtown is pretty decent: the Healthline runs down Euclid and then there’s the Rapid). However, I wouldn’t suggest riding it by yourself after dark (but then again, not really sure why you would want to do that). And Cleveland is obviously not nearly the city Boston is.

About co-ops. Case does not really have a co-op program per se, in which they place you directly with companies (you kind of have to figure it out yourself), but so many students have done them who would be more than willing to help you out with figuring stuff out. I’ve never actually met someone who wanted to do a co-op and wasn’t able to.

We were told that something like 2/3 of the Case engineering students do a co-op. I liked the idea that they are available, but not required if that does not turn out to be his thing. (He really seems drawn to the idea of research.)

I visited Case two weeks ago. My mom and I flew into Cleveland and didn’t rent a car. We took the RTA from the airport to campus. That didn’t work so well. The people on the RTA were fine, but there just wasn’t anyone at any of the stops, it felt a little unsafe. Also, when we walked to Little Italy, I just felt extremely nervous even though it was a pretty close walk and it was only like 8 o’clock. The entire neighborhood just felt a little sketchy. Even walking down Euclid just next to the Village made me nervous, there just wasn’t anyone there. The actual campus seemed completely safe, but it felt as though once you left campus at all, the neighborhoods were very working-class or lower. I just didn’t feel very safe outside of the campus at all.

Also, if you’re looking for a hotel. STAY AT THE GLIDDEN HOUSE. It is so beautiful, the service is fantastic, and the rooms are very nice. I can’t say enough good things about the Glidden House. Stay there.

Honestly, yeah, Cleveland and the area around Case is a bit sketchy, as is true of pretty much any urban campus, you figure out how to be smart and stay safe.

If you’re nervous going into Little Italy, you will probably have a hard time at Case (or will have to adjust your expectations). Little Italy is, in my experience, pretty much the safest place on/near campus (other than the main quad and maybe some of the dorms). Parts of it are sort of rough around the edges aesthetics-wise but I’ve never heard of anything happening in Little Italy (we get emails alerts any time any crime happens). I feel amazingly safe in Little Italy, actually I live here now and one of my neighbors left their bike on the sidewalk for about a week, completely unlocked and no one bothered to take it.

As far as Euclid goes, if you go pretty much even the slightest bit east on Euclid past the Village…well, let’s just say it’s pretty obvious you should never do that unless you’re in a group (and even then, only for a good reason like going to the Rapid station).
