How safe is the UCLA campus and the surrounding area? Do people feel comfortable walking around late at night? How is the crime rate at UCLA and the surrounding area? Are there any notorious spots to avoid?

its safe man. its in the rich part of the city. just the sporting "nationalism" is crazy. ive been to one of their football games...absolutely go hysterical when they UCLA scores a touch down and if they win...run...im serious...couple years ago i went to their football game.

yeah the campus and surrounding area is very safe - people walk around at all hours with no problems. Thats not to say that there is no crime here, but I would say that the majority of it does not occur in the presence of the victim - i.e. it theft from an empty office/room, etc.
We have our own campus police department that does a very good job of keeping the campus protected.

At my 4 years there, there has only been one or two random instances that made no sense and had no evidence to it whatsoever.

It's a big school, it's "LA" but really... it's nothing.

I'm not saying you should think it's the safest campus in the world but there really is nothing to worry about at all. The worst (most common) are thefts at the dorms, if you door is open. Little stuff though.
