Campus safety?

Toured Syracuse last week and liked it much better than I thought I would. Our tour guide mentioned that security is available to escort you home late at night which led me to believe that crime may be an issue on campus. I also read a review giving Syracuse a C+ on safety but those reviews can be subjective at best. Any current/former students have any insight on this? THanks.

None of my friends have ever mentioned that the campus wasn't safe, but most colleges offer a security escort after certain times in the night. I think its mostly to give students a piece of mind.

I'm neither a current student nor a former student but I know that Syracuse is in a pretty shady area. I read an article saying that it's not recommended to walk alone at night. As for Security as I would imagine it's the best that it possibly can be. All the dorms have a security guard in the lobby and have keycard locks. Despite the surrounding area, I would say Syracuse is pretty safe.

Current student here and I've never used the "escort you home service" and I don't plan to. It's unnecessary. I feel plenty safe on campus and if not, I can just take the free bus back to my dorm. Like cdiamond said, it's more for a peace of mind than for anything else. As long as you're on campus, you're fine. I don't know why anyone would ever do this, but if you ever walked into the city alone, especially at night, then naturally, you shouldn't feel safe.

i know that a number of colleges have this program, and I assume it is just something to say that you have and that you are proactive in terms of safety...i don't think a huge number of people use those services

Thanks everyone. I think it is true of many universities that while campus is considered safe the outlying areas may not be...I am starting another thread now about the College of Visual/Performing Arts vs. Newhouse Communication...Film, TV, Radio...confused about which would be right for me and which is more desirable for a film major.

Syracuse's campus is pretty compact and quite safe even after dark. I think the campus escort service is not used very much. The crime problems happen mainly to off-campus residents getting their cars broken into, and of course, to drunk students wandering the nearby streets alone at 2 a.m. on their way back from the bars.

There was a daylight stranger rape very close to campus a couple years ago. As someone who has attended, lived, worked around Syracuse U for decades I can tell you that was a highly unusual and isolated incident that was taken very seriously. (And, they caught the guy.)
