Campus strictness

I understand that Rice seems to be very lenient with alcohol policies. Does anyone know how strict they are with weed policies? Is it easy to do or is that supervised more strictly? Also... are there many kids who smoke or do they mostly just drink?

I’d say that pot is fairly prevalent but that you’d only really notice if you went looking for it. Usage tends not to be as blatant as alcohol. (You’ll still probably smell it on the balconies.)

I’m not sure what percentage of the population smokes pot, but I do know that it’s neither tiny nor nearly as large as the percentage that drinks.

As for the policies, it depends. It’s probably more strict than alcohol, but I still wouldn’t consider it strict. I don’t really know how to quantify it.

It’s not strict at all. Why should it be? You can’t overdose on pot, so there will never be EMS calls from someone who smokes. Alcohol, on the other hand…

I would liken enforcement to that of underage drinking, maybe a little more strict. Doing something that gets the cops attention can get you in trouble; that said, they won’t come looking for you and search your room.

I’m pretty sure I remember reading a statistic that said that something like 15% of the Rice undergraduate population has partaken in the usage of marijuana in the last 30 days (as of the date the survey was administered). So it’s definitely there, but not large enough for you to really notice if you aren’t looking.
