If any of you have visited NYU, what was the campus and student life like? I'm still contimplating over whether or not to apply and I've heard that its broken up campus through out the city really takes away from the "cozy campus" feel. But even if the university is situated around the city~ is the student body really close at least?

I've only visited NYU a few times, and I'm not an NYU student (I find out if I am or not in a week...!), so my opinion may not be as good as an actual NYU student's, but I think it is really cozy. Greenwich Village in general is a lot different from the rest of the city because it does have a lot more of a small-town feel to it, and I feel very comfortable in it. I also see NYU students all over the place around Washington Square Park every time I visit, so it's not like you're a small fish in a big ocean. Most of NYU is really close to the general Washington Square Park area. Some residential halls are spread farther out, but those are the upperclassmen dorms, so it's not like any freshman are stuck far away. Those residential halls get free transportation service to the school buildings anyway.

I may be biased though. I was never really quite into the small campus kind of college, I've had enough of that, being that I live in a small town with a graduating class of less than 250 students, where everyone knows everyone else's business. If you like that though, NYU is probably not the college for you.

For all intents and purposes, Washington Square Park IS NYU. Most of the classroom buildings are in the 3-block radius on the east side of the park and a large proportion of people live around there.

Well, the free transportation is pretty crappy, and two of the freshman dorms are really far away/two more are not in the WSP area/a few freshmen were placed in SoHo or Chinatown because there were too many of us, but you get used to walking. And it's really not bad... even if you live in Union Square, you meet other NYU students in the streets every time you walk down to Washington Square.

But now they're going to be doing renovations on WSP... so half the park will be shut down. I don't know if that affects anything in your decision?

Uhh, if you want this really tight knit family type college experience... don't go here. I mean, it's possible to make it happen, but it's not easy (compared to some other schools).

Even if most of the buildings around WSP are NYU's, it still doesn't feel 'cozy' - it feels like NYC (a fairly quaint portion of NYC, but still). This could be good or bad, depending on you.

Well, I wouldn't say everyone around here is a loner or anything, but yeah, there's a degree of independence that is higher than it would be if you went to, say, a college in the middle of nowhere, where there would be no one around BUT fellow students.

futurenyustudent -- The WSN's been doing stories every so often on it for months; you could look at the archives. But basically, they're moving the fountain and apparently fixing the plumbing, and they're supposed to be "increasing the amount of usable green space" or whatever. It's supposed to be done two to three years from now, which I'm hoping is true, since I don't want to graduate in Yankee Stadium, no matter how cool it might be.
