Campus/students

So, I'll be getting my transfer decision in 2 weeks. I live like 3 hours from campus but I've never actually seen it. If I get in I have to send in an enrollment deposit by May 15th which is the same day I'm flying back so I won't be able to visit ever. What is campus like? (buildings, plants, set-up, etc.) the school I go to now doesn't really have a central campus, which really sucks (I'm familiar with Walla Walla so don't worry about that). Also, why did you choose Whitman over your other choices? Thanks!

The website has some pretty cool video tours in the admissions section–also some webcams. If you wander around the website you’ll get a fair sense of the campuse space.

where are you wanting to transfer from??

Upenn (10char)

another quick question…transfer decisions are out tomorrow, does whitman send letters or is it just online?

Wow, #nineteen, you are transfering from Penn?
I would be very, very interested in hearing why. Both schools are of interest to me, so your experience would be invaluable. thanks

its just not for me. too urban, too big, too impersonal etc. I changed my major and the dept. here isn’t the greatest. make sure you visit before you enroll, the internet makes the campus look wayyy nicer than it actually is. but the reasons I hate it here seem to be why other people love it so it all depends on your preferences. i’d be so pumped if i get into Whitman tomorrow its such a better fit for me.

Did you consider Whitman when you were first applying?
What made you apply to Penn in the first place?
I am familiar with the Penn campus – its urban setting, but also green spaces and a mix of nice and hideous buildings. I can see why some would not care for it. Do you feel comfortable sharing the reasons you hate it, beside the campus?
is it the pre-professionalism of the student body?
the, for lack of a better word, pushy nature of the predominantly East coast students?
snobbism?
just too big overall?
I think a visit is key, as well. What would you recommend focusing on while visiting, that maybe the typical tour would miss?
thanks so much, I will keep my fingers crossed that Whitman comes through for you :)

-I did not consider Whitman when I was first applying, I had no idea what I was doing
-I applied to Penn soley based on prestige
-other reasons I dislike the school: overwhelming greek social scene, lack of community, lack of undergrad focus, VERY pre-professional, campus is kind of scary at night
-now that you mention it yeah the people on the east coast tend to have a much different personality, one that I’m not particularly fond of (in general/no offense intended). but then again I’m from small-town Idaho so it could just be culture shock on my part…most of the people I know are from the northeast or some random country (there are a ton of international students)
-yes, its too big overall because I’m not a fan of the lecture hall/recitation style courses
-make sure you sit in on a class in your intended major, the student led tours are usually pretty good but they don’t take you past dorms that aren’t the quad; side note: if you go here don’t live in the quad there are big rats, roaches, and millipedes and everything echoes

hope that helps a little…if you get into wharton go there, but all of the other schools are overrated in my opinion

i got in :)

Congratulations, what are you going to do next?? Did you only apply to Whitman. I’m just asking because I’m having a hard time deciding between Whitman and Pomona…:(

no but I find out from everywhere else on may 15th. I also applied to oxy, scripps, cmc, pomona, carleton, and grinnell…so I get to wait some more!

Aha, so you applied to Pomona as well  Which one would you choose (if you get into Pomona as well, hopefully) & why??!

Congratulations #nineteen! Glad to hear it. CMC and Scripps are also on my radar. Can’t wait to hear how that turns out for you. I would really like your impression of those schools, as well!
Best of luck – keep us updated!

@legato
I’d have to think about that one a little longer because I got kind of a weird vibe at pomona but the academics are amazing
@broetchen
Thanks! As far as Scripps goes I’m crossing it off my list bc I’d rather go to Whitman, but everyone I met there was sooo kind and friendly. I love CMC, I don’t think I really fit the mold of what they’re looking for but if you want to major in econ, gv’t, or polisci this is the place to be. Everyone I met there was really cool and I had a great time on my visits (been 3 times). It seems to combine a great education in a more relaxed atmoshpere and its getting more recognition for being such a great school. Are you a transfer student?

Can you elaborate a bit more on your experience that led to your perception of this weird vibe at Pomona. Also, can you shed some light about what attracts you to Whitman and Pomona and what would make you choose one over the other. I hope you don’t mind, that would be really helpful to me.

btw, are you M P on facebook?? If so I think you’d have noticed my topic of the same title as the one I posted on CC.

whoa did my post get deleted? anways yeah thats me I’ll write it there its easier

keeping my fingers crossed for your other schools, too.
Not a transfer, looking at freshman admission next fall.
Penn, CMC, Whitman, UW, Scripps are all part of the list at the moment.

oh alright, props for being on top of this college stuff already. try and do interviews at all of them it really helps.
