Campus tour matters?Yea or No?

Will campus tour makes a big different on admission? better chance to get in?

I was planning to visit Pitt this August, but unfortunately the campus tour date does not fit with my schedule,
Now, i need to make a choice between Pitt campus tour and school event,
It will be really helpful, if someone can tell me does campus tour matters,
will it affect my chance to get in

Thank you

Push…up…

according to the common data set, “very important” factors are your GPA, standard test scores and rigor of academic record. http://www.ir.pitt.edu/cds/documents/CDS2010-11PittsburghCampus.pdf

after that, many other factors are “considered” including “applicant’s level of interest” - my take is that if you are otherwise qualified to admit based on the very important factors, whether you have visited will be less important. On the other hand, if you think you are borderline, you might want to visit.

Also- there are many opportunities to visit over the summer, not just a single date in August. [University of Pittsburgh: Undergraduate Admissions & Financial Aid](http://www.oafa.pitt.edu/visit.aspx) August 5, 6, 12, 13, and 20.

I don’t think that a tour will make a difference for admissions. My daughter did not set foot on campus until aftershe was admitted. If you are visiting campus, that shows interest. You might also fill out an application while you are there if that is an option–they will know you visited.

thank you for all your answers, since I don’t have a good academic (GPA), i should visit and show my interest.
Another question:
If have a extremely low GPA but a pretty high SAT and good ECdo I have a chance to get in?

Thank you

What do you mean by an “extremely low” GPA?

3.0uw…which is low…compare to others

My experience has been that your SAT scores carry more weight than your GPA. Students from my daughter’s high school with a 4.0 but SAT scores between 1200 and 1290 did not get accepted to Pitt where other students with a lower GPA but an SAT score over 1300 were accepted.

You should also take into account how hard the classes were and what ECs they had. Girl at my school had close to a 4.0 and near perfect SAT didn’t get into any Ivies/big name schools because she had almost no ECs. Pitt wants well-rounded students, not study-bees who sit in their room all day.

Awesome: was that an unweighted GPA? They updated Naviance and class of 2011 had 3 students going to Pitt :)

Awesome-- Base on the Pitt’s website, i got no chance according to my low GPA…but if i got a high SAT, it’s possible for me to get in, right ?

Might have been unweighted if I remember correctly…Also any chance you can PM me the names of the students attending? I’d like to contact them to welcome them to Pitt/give them my personal contact info :)

Like I said, anything goes. But it really depends. How rigorous was your curriculum? Were you doing a lot of ECs that you were heavily involved in at top levels (i.e. leadership). Do you know your rec letters will be awesome? How high is your SAT (is it honor’s college material: 1400/1450+)? What kind of essay are you writing.

Also why is your GPA low? Did you have one or two bad classes that really screwed it up, or did you consistently get lower grades in all your classes?

it all depends what major you are applying for also…some majors here at pitt are a lot more difficult to get accepted for. with that being said, i was accepted to the school of nursing with a 3.0 unwighted GPA, and a 28 ACT. like you, I had a lot of leadership and EC’s dealing with my field of study, had an awesome essay, and very good reccommendations. I too, did not visit the campus until after I was admitted. The best thing to do is apply as early as you can and send all supplemental materials. best of luck to you!
