Campus Vibe, Diversity, Grade deflation and workload

All:
My D is seriously considering F&M. She loves the campus and the people she has met. She is concerned about what she hears about workload, grade deflation, and the location of the town. She has attended a competitive private school, and is used to a healthy workload, but she wants to have some fun in college too.

I have read both positive and negative comments on this post. Can parents and/or students comment, from their prospective, about the atmosphere of the school? Is it a pressure cooker, or do students thrive on the pressure? Does the grade deflation demotivate bright students? Or do people feel that their grade means something?

Finally, how time consuming are the sports---most of the teams look pretty high powered to me....

Thanks!

I’m a senior here at F&M. Like at most schools, workload and grading kind of depends on the department and the professor. To be perfectly honest, my mom went to engineering school and the average grades in her major were like a C. And it used to be that a C is average. The average grade at F&M is north of a 3.0 or a B/B+. If your child is smart, finds an academic area of interest and works hard, she should be fine. The course load is slightly above average here, but not impossible. And there is time to do extracurriculars.
