Campus visit in New England

HI. I'm Japanese. I'm a junior in a Japanese high school right now.

I'm going to apply to several US colleges this year and I'm thinking of making campus visit in October, 2012.

Since I have never visited the US, I have no idea what root to take.
So, can you help me make a good schedule? I think I can stay in the US for 1 week.

Colleges I really want to visit: Dartmouth, Haverford, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Yale.
Colleges I want to visit: Princeton, Carleton, Grinnell, (Harvard). (Do you have any recommendations as to which collges are worth visiting?)

Thanks in advance. :)

This will be tough in one week. I’d eliminate Grinnell and Carleton as too far from the others. Maybe fly into Philadelphia and visit Haverford and Swat then drive to Princeton. Fly to Boston from Newerk and visit Harvard. Drive to Wes and Dartmouth from there. Yale is tough to fit in but if it’s a must skip Princeton and head to New Haven by car from Philly. Fly home from Boston.

Thanks, Waverly.
i will skip princeton and i don’t drive a car. then, what should i do?

Hayato

You can take trains. There’s one from Philly to NYC, where you can then get one to New Haven. This is very slow, however. I’m not really sure how you’ll do this trip without a car. Just getting from stations to schools will require some long taxi rides I guess.

You do realize that Carleton and Grinnell are not in New England, right? Neither are Princeton, Swarthmore, or Haverford, though New Jersey and Pennsylvania are certainly closer to New England than Minnesota and Iowa are.

Your trip will be very difficult without a car, and the time required when using public transportation–bring tied to train and bus schedules, waiting for taxis–means even visiting only the actual New England schools on your list will require some very precise planning.

The trip is possible, but will be tough.

Fly into PHL, take taxi to Swarthmore. Second taxi from Swarthmore to Haverford. Check with each school to see if they have an International Students director who can help you from points A to B. You can take a nearby train from Haverford to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station for Amtrak’s Acela (express train) to New Haven (Yale).

From New Haven, Amtrak to Meriden station, Wesleyan is 7 miles from station. Look at school website to see about taxi/bus to campus from Meriden train station. Back to New Haven, and on to Boston where you can catch the Dartmouth Coach (bus) from South Station to Hanover, NH (Dartmouth). Round trip will return you to Logan and can fly out of Boston (BOS).

You could add Princeton (train from Philadelphia’s 30th Street to Princeton Junction/then train shuttle to Princeton (basically on campus) and Harvard (many other Boston schools) if you have more time, but the trip is chock full as it is.

Good luck!

Instead of a taxi from Philadelphia Int’l Airport (PHL) to Swarthmore, you could use an Airport Shuttle (a shared ride) which would be more cost effective than a taxi. You could then take a taxi to Haverford, unless someone @ Swarthmore can suggest an alternate mode of transport to Haverford.

Again, good luck!

Hi Hayato,

The success of a trip like this depends on how much time you’ll have to make it and what your budget is. It’s possible to get to almost all of these schools without a car, but might require careful scheduling. Also, there are so many other schools close to the colleges you mention that might also be great fits for you–you don’t want to miss them if you are coming all the way from Japan!
Good luck!

Agree with post #6. A bus goes to Logan airport and several points in Boston from Dartmouth. It is the best way you can get to Boston. Train tkes long time and in fact I think it goes to New Haven, CT. before ending up in Boston. I think the admission department would not have any objection if you want to ride their bus. Check with them.

Acela Express takes <3 hours from Philadelphia, PA to New Haven, CT and ~2 hours from New Haven, CT to Boston, MA. Dartmouth Coach is the best bet from Boston to Hanover, NH.
