Campus visit over the summer

Does it make sense to visit the campus in the summer? iow, do you think the school would show ok in the summer without the normal activity around? We’re from NH so its a big trip that I’d like to make worthwhile and would likely hit up a few other campuses but I’m hoping UA can impress.

Absolutely, just keep in mind although summer session is in progress there are fewer college students on campus and it won’t provide exactly the same social feel as a fall visit might. The campus is absolutely gorgeous right now and is alive with other activities and camps… I say go for it while you have the time to visit leisurely. Contact your recruiter, the HC, Admissions, or Alumni Hall to schedule a personal visit. If it makes your list of colleges, plan to visit again in the fall. Enjoy! Roll Tide!:)

Maybe it is just us (DD and I), but being on campus when school was in session did not impact my daughter’s decision to attend Bama.

Things she noted (which did not matter if school was in session) was information gleaned from meetings with the Honors College and Spanish Departments, Campus Information Tour (buildings/campus), campus buildings and layout (driving/walking around), feel for Tuscaloosa (driving around town/campus), Sorority Row, Bryant Denney Stadium, awesome scholarships, Southern hospitality experienced everywhere we went, and the wonderful vibe from UA!

The ONLY thing she noted about UA that was directly related to school being in session was the numerous students seen walking/jogging/running in the evening (early April), and special notice was given to the Sorority Girls in groups wearing their letters walking/jogging/running.

The only thing I noticed, besides the aforementioned item my daughter noticed, was the banners hanging from sorority houses congratulating members for being selected to certain honor societies the following day.

So, I feel you can make an informed decision whether or not school is in session. DD and I visited a few schools when school was not in session and nowhere did this fact play into account in the decision to apply/attend given school.

Hope this helps!!

I think that if you go during a time when Bama Bound and/or summer classes are in session, then the campus may seem more lively during the summer.

Have you contacted Allison and Susan in the honors college to help set up your visit?

Do try to visit Bama…I think you’ll be very impressed by all the new facilities.

If you do visit, first set up the campus tour online…try for an early morning time! Don’t bother with the “info session”, you’ll get that info here pretty much on the Alabama forum on College Confidential which is VERY active.*

[Things To Do](A WINTER WONDERLAND - Visit Tuscaloosa)

We made a last minute trip in late May – we were supposed to be going to Florida to look at their 6 year BS/DPT program and the program director had to leave unexpectedly for a funeral. So we just hopped in the car and drove to Alabama instead. First off, even though we weren’t scheduled for anything except a campus tour folks bent over backwards to accommodate us in the Exercise Science department and the Honors College. There was a Bama Bound session going on so the campus was quiet but far from boring. We did end up going back in September but this was partly because my D was racing Triathlon Nationals there and we scheduled our official honors college tour for the day before the race. As long as you are careful to schedule everything you think you might want to see it will be a worthwhile visit. I was sold from the minute we got there!

We toured UA over the Thanksgiving Break two years ago. School was not in session, and it was cold and rainy the entire time we were there. We submitted our son’s room deposit before we left town. When it is right, you just know it.

Similar story here. We toured in December of '11 and it just so happens that was during finals week, so campus was especially quiet. It didn’t make one bit of difference. For the December we are familiar with, the weather was spectacular, and the campus was still beautiful. S applied online and paid his deposits from the car on the way back home. He knew that was where he wanted to be.

I’ll be the contrarian. There is no way my D would have gone to UA if we visited in the summer. She wasn’t a big fan of hot weather. If I took her to Tuscaloosa when the heat and humidity were 90+ (which would be my luck), that would have been the end, even though she wouldn’t need to be in T-town during summer. My cold weather girl got used to the climate difference gradually and now loves the fall-winter-spring temps at Bama, as I suspected she would, but it would have gone straight off the list if we visited on a hot summer day. Heat may not be a concern for your student, but keep it in mind if it is.
