Campus Visit Planned-future Architecture student

Daughter will be a freshman in Architecture Fall 2012. Planning to visit the campus the first week of April to look at dorms, hopefully meet people in Architecture department as well as get a flavor of campus life.

Have a request in for dorm/suite tours. Will contact Architecture department. The area that seems most uncertain to me is what do campus residents do for fun on weekends. She won’t have a car. Are there any hiking trails on or next to campus. On Google Maps I saw Bonelli Regional Park and it’s lake, across Highway 10. Is it a good place to go. Can you get there on public transportation? Do people go to Claremont as a local college town? What is public transportation like?

Hope not too many questions.

Thanks

The first week of every quarter, the Architecture department holds and open house known as ‘Interim’ at the IBC. It showcases select students’ work. It is an honor for a student to have his/her work selected for Interim, and a great way for future students to see what they will be doing in future years. It is usually held on the Wednesday of the first week of each quarter, so if that holds true for Spring 2012, it will be on Wednesday, March 28 (but double-check. I could be wrong.) If you can plan your trip for that week it would be better than early April. That being said, if you’re tied into the April timeframe, do stop by the IBC and the freshman studio in building 1 anyway. Even though it will be early in the quarter you’ll be surprised how much work is being done. In fact, spring quarter of freshman year my daughter got a big model project on day one, due in a week and a half, so in early April there will definitely be some work being done in the building 1 studio.

the ENV Remix is on April 9-13.

As for things to do, Bonelli Park is OK for hikes. There are other hikes up in the San Gabriel foothills. Claremont is a nice college town and downtown Pomona has been going through a renaisance of it’s own with new clubs and restaurants. Most student’s actually end up going out to LA, Pasadena and Santa Monica. Honestly, she’ll be so busy with studio work, she may not have much free time other than to catch a movie on Friday nights.

Here are the San Gabriel mountains hikes.

This is great information. Thanks for the replies.

We probably won’t visit the campus for the Interim Open House. It is tentatively scheduled for Mon March 26th 6-8 PM. School night and we are in San Diego. Is the ENV Remix something to attend for a prospective student. Couldn’t find a schedule of events on-line.

We will be visiting week of April 2, visit the studios in IDC and building 1. Look at the dorms and visit the main building (7 I think). We’ll also look at the natural areas as hiking local trails has been a source of enjoyment for our daughter.

Thanks again

check out their facebook page for Remix details.

March 28th will be the Neutra Medal award for Pritzker prize winning architect Tadao Ando. In case you don’t know, he’s a living legend of an architect. It should be a packed house. Last year they awarded it to another Pritzker price winner, Thom Mayne. Plenty of such activities at Cal Poly Pomona and not at SLO.

Claremont is the college town in the area and it’s a great little community. Old Pasadena is also a good area for weekends.

There is a small hiking area on campus just downhill from the Kellogg Mansion.
