Campus visit programs for admitted students

Does anyone know anything about this event and what it's all about? It runs from April 10-13. Thanks.

Um, do you mean open campus or discovery weekend? THose are both weekends specially dedicated to new admits, where they come to campus and there are special panels and tours and things to help them get a feel for hte place so they can decide if they want to come permanently.

Can you give us a little more info about the specific event you're thinking of?

Open Campus is April 10-11 and Discovery Weekend is April 11-13.

Well, I was thoroughly investigating the website when I came across the information for parents page where they have the list of deadlines and events. On there it includes the following:

Regular Decision letters mailed Mar. 21

Campus visit programs for admitted students Apr. 10-13

Last day for an overnight stay Apr. 24

Candidates reply date May 1

Orientation programs begin late-Aug.

So I was wondering what was typical for students to attend...is it recommended to attend more than just the orientation programs? I did visit the campus for about 2 hours late on a Friday afternoon (that's unfortunately all time allotted for) and did not have the opportunity to go on an actual tour.

Well, if you're pretty sure you want to go to Smith, and it's inconvenient for you to make the journey on a thursday or friday in April, you're by no means required to go to the campus visit programs. They're basically intended to try to convince students who are accepted but not sure if they're going to attend. Like I said, there are special panels offered by academic departments, there are tours, there are various little events. Open Campus is for everyone (April 10-11) but Discovery Weekend is for students of color only (April 12-13).

BUT in my opinion, open campus is a madhouse. As a tourguide, I dread that weekened, because the campus is basically engulfed by nervous prospies (prospective students). A much better way to make your decision about attendance is just to come on a normal weekend and take a tour, do an overnight, go to some classes. It will give you a better perspective, and you'll avoid crowds. The tour is worthwhile, because Gold Key Guides (like me!) are great, and you'll get to see a dorm room, some classrooms hopefully, and talk with a student. If there aren't many visitors the day you come, your tour may be one on one as well (we usualy have more guides than guests on any given day).

If you are accepted, you will have to go to orientation in August, obviously, cause that's when you move in, get registered, etc.

You can't do a tour or overnight on a normal weekend, but you can take a tour Monday-Friday and do an overnight from Monday-Thursday.

However, Open Campus can be fun because you'll meet other students who will also end up as your classmates at Smith - I stayed in a room with three other prospies who had chosen Smith, and one of them I still know by face, and I took two classes with another my first semester - we still see each other and chat occasionally. There's also a lot of activities planned for prospective students to attend at night.
