Campus visit recommendations

I’m going to visit UT in a few weeks and I would like a few recommendations for places to eat, what to see on campus, what to do and see in Austin etc… Are there any good and authentic Mexican restaurants near campus?

Chuy’s is a really good mexican restaurant chain that is located in Austin. I went there on my college visit to UT and it was the place to go. There might be a line to get in, but it is worth it!

soc2015,

If you have never visited UT, I am sure you will love it.

My daughter and I visited many colleges when she was considering, applying, and evaluating schools. We learned something in the process. Summer, is not a good time to visit a university. The vibe is different. You do not get the same feel for a school when it is not in normal session. If you are entering your Senior year of HS, visit schools during the normal semester.

Good Luck.

Definitely visit Chuy’s, I haven’t met one person who doesn’t like it! [also ask for the creamy jalapeno dipping sauce for your chips, it is delicious  ]

Trudy’s is close to campus and good.

If you can make it to Barton Springs, it’s a beautiful spring-fed pool to swim in. You can ride the little train in Zilker Park, too! :)

Longhorn make me number 2 - Chuy’s is NOT Mexican, it’s TexMex, although most Texans think that’s Mexican. lol

OP - you’ll be hard pressed to find true and good Mexican food in town, but there are some good interior Mexican restaurants around, just not near campus. And if you’re like me and grew up with Baja Mexican food, get your fill before you leave home because there’s none of that here. There are a lot of great things to see in town, and good food, but I agree with socal that you might want to rethink the timing of your visit. The heat and humidity will likely make it uncomfortable to be out exploring both the campus and the town for any length of time, and the campus right now is a mish-mash of students and not representative at all of what you’d see during the normal long-semester.

Here’s a link to a recent post with places to visit and eat:

I HATE Chuy’s.

:/

It’s overpriced and well, you find the same kind of Tex-Mex (CRAP imo) food elsewhere.

The best time to visit is during a game week…there is nothing like it!

Correction: I’ve never met an AUSTIN NATIVE who didn’t like Chuy’s.

lol Longhorn I can introduce you to lots of Austin natives who also can’t stand Chuy’s, or Maudie’s for that matter. They’re both fun places to hang out and drink, but the food sucks.

Ah well, you just met one. lol
But really, I know a lot of people that absolutely love Chuy’s - I just don’t happen to be one of them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will not be able to visit during the upcoming school year because of scheduling issues, but I would love to be there on a football weekend. I have been a fan of UT football ever since I watched Vince Young almost singlehandedly defeat Michigan in the 2005 Rose Bowl.

I’m really disappointed to find out that there is a lack of authentic Mexican food near UT. I’ve lived in Orange County (we don’t call it the OC) my entire life, so if I wanted some great and authentic Mexican food, I could find it relatively easily. Sundoll- yeah, I grew up on the Baja style Mexican food, particularly fish tacos. I guess I’ll just try Chuy’s and see how I like it.

::cough:: it was USC ;)

And if you’re from Southern Cali like me, I doubt you’ll find anything that truly comes close to the quality of Mexican food you’ve become accustomed to. But there’s still other types of good food to be found, and it makes your trips home that much more enjoyable.

Nope, it was 2005 :[YouTube - Texas Vs. Michigan 2005 Rose Bowl(04-05 season)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrmVmVGtWAA&feature=related)

VY has an almost equally as impressive game as he did vs U$C.

The 2006 game was vs USC

It was played in 2006, but it was for the 2005 season and that’s the year our national championship is recorded as - so we’re both right. I’ve just gotten used to using the previous year as used in titles despite the games being played in January.

Right, the game vs USC was part of the 2005 season, but was played on Jan 4th(?), 2006. Therefore, it is typically called the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Yeah it is, but when I see 2005, I think 2005 National Champions, which was decided at that game. It’s not often that the actual Rose Bowl is also the championship game, so keeping 2 naming conventions straight on a Friday night after a couple of glasses of wine isn’t my forte.

Enjoy your trip in a few weeks - you’re probably in for a bit of a culture shock, but a lot of Austin reminds me of CA and the adjustment has been easier than expected.

I’m an Austin native and I can’t stand Chuy’s. LOL,
