Campus Visit Suggestions

We are heading to Ann Arbor for a campus visit.

Any suggestions re: must go to places to eat, places to go to get the real UMichigan experience?

Zingerman’s Deli.

Check out north campus, the reflection pool, peirpont commons, the dude, hatcher, the fishbowl, the ugli, modern language building, the diag, etc. What are you specifically interested in (major, type of food to eat, etc?)

Are you looking for on campus food or off campus?

Don’t know if you’ve gone yet, but my son found it useful to sit in on both freshman AND senior classes in his department. It helped him identify the “flavor” – but in his case he was comparing work in a small, specialized program, so perhaps that was more meaningful than an average “sit in” (school of music, where teachers and styles are particularly relevant.)

Visit was great. Did tour and D sat in on a few classes. Lots of eateries near central campus.

Went to Zingerman’s, since so many people recommended it. I must say I don’t get it. I found it way overpriced and the Rueben was average at best. But, hey, we can least say we went there.

Regarding Zingerman’s - agree. Very overpriced, food is average, but it seems to have evolved into a required Ann Arbor experience. The place is always busy, so they must be doing something right!

I don’t want to beat up on Zingerman’s BUT I totally agree – .overpriced, average food at best. I, too, had the Rueben, my favorite sandwich, but not anywhere close to the price. The place might be nice after a football game but I wouldn’t make a special trip there. My boy is a senior.so I have been hearing on CC how great Zingerman’s is.for the last three years.

The top delis in the Detroit area are just as good, if not better, than Zingerman’s. Unfortunately the prices at all better delicatessens have dramatically increased over the past few years. It is hard to find a corned beef sandwich on rye for under $10.00 dollars anymore.

Hi I am resurrecting this thread since a family member is visiting there very soon.

re #2 “Check out north campus, the reflection pool, peirpont commons, the dude, hatcher, the fishbowl, the ugli, modern language building, the diag, etc.”
Is there general agreement that these are the "sites to see"on campus? and does everyone know what these cryptic references mean? What would “etc” constitute? Anything notable to see off campus?

Is there any food they should take back here for me to sample? I had thought something form Zingerman’s, but the above would suggest otherwise… Also, given those same Zingerman’s comments, what are some of the better places for them to eat while in Ann Arbor?

I’m assuming they aren’t taking a campus tour? My favorite place on campus is the Law Quad (in particular the inside of the Law Library). The Michigan Union and League are pretty cool to check out and don’t miss the Museum of Natural History across from CC Little and next to the Central Campus transit center. It’s incredible in there, or at least it is to me. The art museum is also worth checking out if you have the time.

If your family is into Michigan Athletics then the Big House and Crisler Arena are south on State St and are apart of South Campus. Definitely worth a drive by if time permits.

The MLB (Moder Language Building) is one of the ugliest things on campus and is nothing worth going out of your way for. North Campus might be interesting if your family member is thinking about being an engineer. The UGLi is the Undergrad Library and again, is nothing special. Hatcher, the grad library right next to the UGLi, is pretty nice inside. The Diag is just the open area directly in front of Hatcher with a bronze (or maybe brass?) Block M in middle.

The fishbowl is inside Angell Hall (the front of which is quite an impressive sight) and is just a big computing center surrounded by glass.

I’m not a foodie but I’m in line with Zingerman’s Deli being overrated and overpriced, but as has been mentioned, it seems to be part of the Ann Arbor experience, for whatever that’s worth. Zingerman’s Roadhouse across town is pretty good though. My favorite place to eat around campus is definitely the Jerk Pit and I think it’s a pretty cool little place.

You should bring back some pastry from Zingerman’s. Try their magic brownie and rugelach. Go check out their website. You can get those at Zingerman’s Bakeshop at 3711 Plaza Dr near Ann Arbor Airport, or any Zingerman’s (roadhouse, deli, etc) and Plum Market. Bakeshop should be freshest as the bakehouse is right next to it…

FWIW I found this from a 2008 thread, still valid?

Zingerman’s is not overrated, nor is it overpriced. It is, one of the best delis I have ever been to…and I know my delis. Even compared to the likes of Katz’s (NYC), Carnegie (NYC) and Schwartz’s (Montreal), Zingerman holds its own. I challenge you all to find me a legitimate article on the best delis in the US that does not mention Zingerman’s. $20 for a deli meal of that caliber is not overpriced. Quality comes at a price. Virtually all good delis charge $12-$18 for a sandwich. Zingerman’s is no different.

Chop House used to serve a decent steak back in the day, but I am not sure if that is still the case.

For those who do not care about the ingredients may think Zingerman’s is overpriced. I know exactly the quality of ingredients they use and I am not surprised why their bread is much more expensive, and therefore, the sandwich made from it too. Also, they pay more than minimal wage to support local economy.

To each his own, Alexandre. I’ll also add the Seoul Garden is phenomenal, but it’s a couple miles south of campus.

The report back I got was : good soup, really good rye bread.
Sandwiches were small. Cold pastrami or corned beef on a sandwich served in-house is just wrong.
It was good, but Katz’s is not quivering.

YMMV.
