Campus visit this Weekend - Blue-Gold game

I will be traveling with d to Southbend this weekend and would appreciate suggestions on how to keep busy with sights to see and activities so she can get a real sense of the spirit of Notre Dame.

Thursday night we will go to the open house & she will be staying overnight with a student and going to classes on Friday morning. I have a meeting with financial aid and an admissions counselor on Friday afternoon, there's a campus tour, The Shirt presentation, and maybe dinner at Legends. I noticed they have a pop culture bowl Friday night, but that is for students & I'm not sure if we could attend - not that she'd want me there anyway.

Saturday is my question - we were planning on attending the blue-gold game, but after researching it, I'm not sure she will get the true Notre Dame football experience. It looks like the stadium is half filled, no half-time show, and it has been described as a "practice game". Don't know if a lot of students attend this or if there are the usual football traditions associated with this game. I don't want her to be turned off by going to a game in a half filled stadium.

Is the blue-gold game worth staying an extra day for? We could fly home Saturday instead.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

If she knows the name and e-mail of the student she will be staying with, perhaps that student could offer some input, as well as offer other suggestions of things to see while on campus.

I think there might be some other big student event going on at the same time as the blue-gold game...

Rocco's is supposed to be very good ND spot (I haven't made it there, yet, but know it is the meeting spots for many alums)-it is the bar where Rudy bar scene was filmed.

Fine dining- Tippicanoe restaurant, in restored Studebaker Mansion in South Bend. Can be tough to get reservations on big weekends at ND.

CSNY D

Sorin's at The Morris Inn has excellent food and is a top-notch dining experience!

Son and husband on their way home as we speak. From NY drove to ND this weekend. Stayed at the Morris Inn. Spectacular they said! (BTW- son is waitlisted)

This is antostal weekend. I hear they skewer a pig at pigtostal. Pretty much the biggest party of the year.

You will have a great time! Bring her/him to the unveiling of "the shirt" at the bookstore from 4:30 to 8:30. There will be great entertainment and Mike Golic from "Mike and Mike" will be there~most of the students are going~it will be fun! On Saturday, I think the blue/gold game is fun~although much quieter than a "real" game! On Saturday night (and all weekend actually) Opera Notre Dame is presenting "Faust". My freshman daughter is in it and says the music is amazing~if your student is into music or theater they might really like this. If interested though, you should look into tickets asap~they are selling out. Have a great time!

If they do a Drum circle (which is a late night tradition on FB Fridays) do not miss it. I don't know if the do it for Blue/Gold game.

BTW, we recently ate at Tippecanoe. It was pleasant enough but the food was nothing to write home about.

My son is also going this Thursday/ Friday. I was thinking of picking him up early Friday afternoon., but I might reconsider. Could I have more details on the unveiling of " The Shirt. " Is it worth staying the whole time?

BDmrad- I agree about the food at Tippecanoe not being stellar, although the vibe/ atmosphere is quite nice.
Although, given a short amount of time, I would eat at South Dining Hall :)

The Shirt Unveiling must be quite an event! Did not know about this, will ask S.

D. told me about the pig roast and if your daughter gets the right host she'll go and have a good ND experience but the less you know about it the better mom.

D. says the Blue & Gold is an excuse for the alumni to come back and get drunk and for everybody to get excited about football again. She is more interested in pigtostal.

The Shirt Unveiling Ceremony is an incredibly commercial affair. There are ads everywhere, they pander to the alumni crowd, and they have cheesy performances by the Pom Squad and the cheerleading squad, as well as a (semi-) celebrity in Mike Golic (although I love him). Knowing what I do about The Shirt's history, I would hope, in the past, it was not nearly as commercialized and marketed, and more a grassroots movement for the unity of the student body, but such is the cost of Adidas sponsorship, I guess.

But, they do have a 70 foot long grill, with free, delicious brats and cold soda for everyone. Frankly, it's worth it just for that. And for the 4 buck discount you get as a student for buying The Shirt on Friday.

Looks like you will able to catch a few Bookstore Basketball games over the week-end. This an annual event that usually draws a tremendous crowd and is great people watching! Check out the official website. The Official Notre Dame Bookstore Basketball Web Site

I hope the weekend visitors share their experiences- would love to hear what they did and their impressions of ND.

Saturday was nice~a little rain, but then clear and FUN! Went to the game (yeah!) and later the ND Opera, Faust. LOVED it all~what a place...where you can be part of amazing football in the afternoon and in the audience of a premier-like Opera at night! Fantastic!
