Campus Visits over Spring Break

Last week, my son (a HS junior) and I spent Spring Break on his first college visits. We saw 4 schools in 4 days (one per day), but the schools were close enough that we could just make a big loop (driving about 600 miles in total, but no more than 2 ? 3 hours per day). Some schools were public and some were private. They varied in size ? from a small LAC to a large State university ? and in location (from rural to very urbanized). The first and last days of our 6-day trip were spent just sightseeing, as we had never been to that part of the country before.

It was a great trip ? not too stressful and very educational. My son now has very clear ideas about what he is looking for in a college so that he can start narrowing down his choices.

there is info about what to do on college visits at http://www.collegetoolkit.com/Guides/College-Visit/resVisit1.aspx and you can find many more such sites with a google search.

I echo what others have said; start by visiting local colleges to get a flavor of whats out there. When you do visit target colleges, learn about them before hand and have a list of things you want to ask about. Write down some notes after each visit before they all blend together.
