Hello everyone, I will be visiting around 5 schools in NY next week, and was wondering what should I do during the visits? What questions should I ask? Are appointments with admissions officers necessary? Would it be weird if I brought along a camera and took notes, etc.? Thanks in advance.

you can find lots of info on the web about campus visits. For example, this.
or this.
Also most of the books about college admission have a chapter about visits.

IMHO you are not visiting at a good time, though. Go read the parents forum thread "One-line descriptions of each LAC culture from enrolled students" and you'll see how different each school can be. You could never discover this by just walking around campus.

As for notes/camera, not unusual at all. In fact you're going to NEED to take notes since after a 5-campus blitz everything will start to see the same. Make a list of questions you'd like to find out about college, then write down your answers after visiting each school while impressions are fresh. Include the queries "the thing that suprised me the most was ...", "my favorite thing was ..", and "what I disliked most was ..."

oooh... thanks for the links and advice!!

True, this isn't the greatest time but my D played 3 varisity sports, had a job, etc. the summer was the only time we had to go. You can still get the "gut feeling" of a place even without kids arounds. Once all is said and done next spring, revisiting could be key.

make sure to check out the surrounding areas--if its in the city walk around campus, take the subway, etc. If the schools are a bit more suburban, drive around. I remember I loved the U Chicago campus, and was all set to accept their offer of admission until we were leaving and I saw the area to the south, it wasn't great. I'm not saying that it should be the only reason to apply, but it should definitely be considered.

awesome... i'm scared and dunno if i should apply for interviews!!

Do you have time to go back if you take a tour and don't have an interview?

hrm... yea i do have time for an interview in august... but that's about it...
