Can anyone tell me much about the campus, dorms, food? I know that it's pretty isolated, and what not, but I heard it has a great creative writing program (my major's in creative writing). I would appreciate it if anyone can get back to me on this... THANKS!

The campus is tiny and surrounded by a lot of woods which can be fun. The dorms are, well, dorms. I live in an awesome suite and I love it but I know most kids are put in triples. I don't think it's horrible or anything though. The food is bad but you get used to it. Purchase itself is a really small town and there's not much to do within the town but if you can get into White Plains, there are more options. The creative writing program is supposedly really good and definitely worth looking into. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. Hope this helps!

From your response, I assume you go to Purchase... So... When you say the food is bad, do you mean it's horrible? What makes it bad? Bad is so vague. I don't know. LOL. Ugh...

I have heard a lot of complains about the school, that it's plain and ugly... Lots of bricks, etc. What do you think about that? How is the maintanence? Is the school in bad shape? Is it filthy? Is it really as bad as people make it seem?

What are students like? Are they sociable? Are they open minded, closed minded? Do they like the school? Do they participle in clubs? Do they smoke and drink like crazy?

Has your experience with the school been influential? Do you like it? Would you go to another school if you could? Why did you choose this school?

What is the faculty like?

Thank you so much for your help!

I don't go to purchase but... I have visited.

Food is HORRIBLE. Worst ever. Might as order your food every day. Yuck.

We specifically visited Purchase. Probably the single best thing is that they have a wooded campus, and the campus is surrounded by trees. In addition, there is a "big" central green area for sports etc,, with most of the building surrounding the central green area.

Both the visual and especially the performing arts are very good. However, I am not sure that I would call them spectacular.

Most of the other things about the school aren't that great. The food was mediocre. The dorms that we saw were old, crowded and dilapidated. The town of Purchase, while quaint, has nothing to do for the kids. Finally, I got a wierd, quirky feel from the culture of the school. Maybe it was just the "vibe" at the time. You really need to visit the school.

It also wasn't the friendliest place around either. We met several grad students, one of which came from Yale undergraduate. None were really helpful or friendly. I got the feeling that they thought we were a nuisance in asking them about the school. However, after all, this is part of the State U of N.Y. system. Being formerly from N.Y, myself, you need to get used to the folks there. SUNY Purchase made me realize why I escaped from New York.

Frankly, there was something amiss about the school that turned us off.

No offense to any grad students but they aren't necessarily my favorite people at Purchase. Sorry they were so mean.

Just an undate... I got accepted to Purchase College, but haven't heard anything about admission into the creative writing program. I don't know why they take it apart like that... It's odd, isn't it? Or do most liberal arts schools do that?

And they won't tell me my scholarship elligibilities until acceptance? Is this common?

Geneseo didn't tell me my financial benefits untiil I got accepted which kinda f***ed me over. I'd assume all SUNYs are like that.

And Purchase was horrible with admission status. I was accepted as well and waited and waited, nothing else came.

It's a giant parking lot.

it really is. There is nothing other than parking lots and buildings. Nothing.

I was a little confused when I got my acceptance to Purchase about a week ago. Do they have rolling admissions or something? Also, is there scholarships, or only for certain programs? I got into the Drama Studies program, so I don't know if there's anything specific for that.

If you want detailed (or not) information, you need to call them.

I had no freakin clue what they were telling me from their mails. Call them!

Yeah, it is rolling admissions. And I don't know when the scholarships come... I've called, unfortunately on the weekends, and haven't heard anything yet... When I find out, I'll be sure to share.

Here's the deal... In order for them to consider any applicant for scholarship, "the student needs at least an 86 academic average and a minimum of 1200 SAT Score (Critical Reading + Math)." I don't qualify because my SAT Score is below that, which I'm very disappointed in. Because of that, I'm not so sure I'll be positively accepting admission...

You may be accepted but you won't quality for scholarship. That's all.

Don't worry too much. SUNY Purchase doesn't require much.

I don't know if anyone of you can help, I am in my mid-20's and currently attend community college for Biology. I am getting sick of wasting time and money on classes that are not going to transfer to a 4-year school, so I am looking to apply to Purchase for their Environmental Science program for the Fall. (Yes I know they are not know for their sciences, I would love to go to Stony Brook-but its too far) Anyway, my GPA is only 2.9-do you think I would be accepted? I know its hard to get in for any Arts programs, but maybe the sciences are not that competitive? I most likely will only be taking 1 or 2 classes a semester (unless I win the lottery) do I still need to go through the whole application process for attending part time?

And at last, does anyone know if the online classes at Herkimer Comm College (Environmental classes) will have an equal transfer to Purchase?

I would appreciate any help!

Floppydee, I hestitate to suggest this, because you wrote that Stony Brook is too far, but have you checked out the environmental SUNY up in Syracuse? Something about forestry, wildlife management.

Best wishes and I hope that others who know SUNY's better than I do can help you better on this thread.

Check out for SUNY Geneseo.

Really great school for science majors

but before people "help" you by suggesting places away from where you live, can you say whether you absolutely, positively cannot move? Lots more options when you can relocate...but you're in your mid-20's so perhaps have other obligations and cannot move.

.............
