The setting is one of the best of all colleges--miles of lakefront with several hills overlooking the lakes. The buildings are a mix of styles and quality. Most older ones are nice. Most built in the 50s-60s are average and the new ones are nice but modern. Here's a good tour.

I've traveled through the States and seen many college campuses: Cornell, SUNY systems, Stanford, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-San Diago, Harvard, MIT, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Washington in St. Louis, Texas, etc. Of all the famous campuses, Madison might have the best surroundings after UC-Santa Barbara. Cornell has a pretty cliffs, but it's so separated from the world. Stanford has pretty buildings, but no enchanting surroundings. One thing that can be positive or negative depending upon your preferences is that in Madison the campus and the city mingle together. I like a calm and separate campus as Notre Dame or Washington or Harvard. Another drawback is that the campus is so huge that it'll take a quite a while to move around the campus.
