Campus

Is there a campus feeling at GWU? Is it hard to meet up with people? etc..

yeah im worried about this too because of its locaction.
i definitely love the fact that its in a city, but if there is really no campus feel at all, then i worry that it's not really the place for me...

I feel like there is a campus atmosphere at GW. I picked GW over NYU for that reason. We have University Yard and Kogan Plaza to hang out at/meet up at, which is like having a quad. Most people live on campus/around campus. It is definitely not hard at all to meet up with people and I always see people I know when I am walking around campus. One thing I have heard visitors say about GW is that the students are very friendly and that seems to be true. Most people are very welcoming and friendly and willing to help, especially upperclassmen. We may not have displays of school spirit at football games and stuff, but people wear lots of GW clothing and tend to proud of the school's accomplishments.

thanks cj_svu6! that was realy helpful.
actually now that you brought it up though (i know it might sound kinda stupid but it has always been something that i was excited to experience in college), are there EVER sports events like football or basketball games where everybody is out there sporting the school colors and cheeering the team on?

GW is very unique in that it's a city campus but still actually - has - a campus. Walking through Foggy Bottom it becomes obvious when one is on GW campus - for about 5 x 6 blocks almost EVERY building is GW. If possible, I suggest you tour GW and also some other city schools. It seems city schools are either disconnected and lacking a 'campus' (BU, NYU, Emerson) or are an island within the city (Georgetown, BC). GW strikes the perfect balance and is probably the best city school in terms of layout. It's also the best school, but that's just my humble opinion...haha. That is not to say, however, it's your standard residential campus. The Mount Vernon Campus is more 'traditional' campus, and a lot of people love it up there. GW is all about preparing and immersing students in the 'real' world (internships, speakers, etc) and the city campus provides the perfect living situation for that. Most GW students want to be actively involved in the world around them in their future careers, and the campus provides a great opportunity for that while still being 'campusy'.

As far as sports spirit goes, people get really into basketball, especially men's. We don't have a football team. It's not a big rah-rah school, and school pride rests more in academics than in sports. The benefits of not having a football team, however, is that people who are really into college football can still cheer for the team of their choice without 'loyalty' issues, and it's not uncommon for college/football fans to watch their teams together in the dorms or at Wow, which is a sports grill on the top floor of the Marvin Center that has tons of TVs all showing sports games.

Oh, and don't worry, you'll make lots of friends. People always have their doors open in the dorms and there are TONS of clubs to get involved with, plus classes. Just leave your door open and be friendly. Everybody will be needing friends, just like you, so you really shouldn't bother yourself with worrying whether you'll make friends. Even though you probably will.

And if you're really worried about it, there's always Greek life - social and professional. There are about 10 sororities and maybe 10-15 frats (I think), plus a handful of professional frats open to both men and women (pre-law, foreign service, business, community service, etc). Lots and lots of opportunities to make friends.
