I visited last summer with my son, who is waiting for acceptance/rejection. The campus is in a small but not puny town less than an hour south of Green Bay (home of the hated Packers NFL football, the real football by the way, team. Cheer for the Minnesota Vikings if you go to Lawrence). Beautiful area of the US, not far from Lake Michigan, Door County and other great northwoodsy areas. Big cities like Minneapolis/St. Paul, Milwaukee and Chicago would be within reach by catching a ride with your friends for a two or three day weekend. Many of your fellow students will be from those cities. Most of the campus sits on a bluff overlooking a river. Some of the campus (tennis courts for example) is at the riverside level. Very attractive campus and very safe.

Here is a link to a recent visit report: [Lawrence University Visit - bonesrock](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vibe/lawrence-university/1637074.html).

If you have the chance to be a Lawrentian, I wouldn’t hesitate. My son had a great 4 years in Appleton and at LU.

We hope we’re getting an acceptance any day now. If so we will visit the campus. Flights to Green Bay are cheaper than to Appleton, but of course we’d need to rent a car. Question: If we fly to Appleton, do we need to rent a car to really see the campus and area? Is it easy to get around from nearby hotels, or is it much better to have the car? D would be attending with no car, of course. Obviously a shuttle or cab to/from the airport is needed, but beyond that are we okay without a car?

If you fly to Appleton, and stay at either the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel or the CopperLeaf Hotel, you will be within walking distance (roughly 5 minutes) of campus. On that walk, you will pass through that part of town most frequented by students. There are also plenty of places to eat within walking distance. The hotels might offer free, or inexpensive, shuttles to and from the airport. (I’d do it this way if I were visiting.)

There is also one B&B at least within a few blocks of campus. Check the school website on where to stay. One of the hotels (can’t remember the name) farther from campus has a shuttle that will take you back and forth. I always fly to Appleton and also rent a car. You don’t need it to see the campus if you stay in the hotels mentioned above or a B&B though. I would always rent one so my son had a car to drive for a short while and we could go to the mall etc. There are cabs to go to and from the airport. I think the company is called Valley Cab. The drive to the campus from the airport is 15 minutes at the most.

I wouldn’t fly to Green Bay unless it is a whole lot cheaper.

I would rent a car either way, since it will allow you to look around the town and the area a little more. The Appleton airport is just a few miles from Lawrence, but Green Bay’s airport is less than 29 miles away, and just a 31 minute drive on a good highway, according to Google maps. That’s quicker than you can get from many metropolitan airports to the downtowns of the cities they serve. So if there’s any significant price difference I wouldn’t worry about flying into Green Bay.

I personally think the Lawrence campus is very attractive. Almost an ideal small college look and feel. If you check the visit reports, I posted one years ago when my older son applied. The only important update is that the new Union/Campus Center is complete and by all reports, spectacular. Appleton is a very pleasant town located in an elongated midsized metropolitan area stretching from Green Bay to Oshkosh that Wisconsinites call the Fox Cities, after the river. Appleton won’t provide the attractions of a big city or a large college town like Madison or Ann Arbor, but it has far more amenities available than do many of the very small towns that host LACs. But the truth is that most college kids spend the vast majority of their time on campus anyway.

Our younger son has been accepted to Lawrence this year. He’s still waiting for some decisions from a few other schools this month, but we would be very comfortable if he chooses Lawrence. It’s a fine school.

We visited Lawrence earlier this fall and were impressed. As far as the surrounding town goes, there’s plenty to do. Appleton seems to have a respectable amount of cultural opportunities for a town its size.

However, I need to contradict strumdatjag. If you go to Lawrence, do NOT root for the Vikings. You may be seriously injured, especially being so close to Green Bay. Being a Packer fan is not only the wisest course of action in order to maintain your safety, but it is also the best because the Packers are about a trillion times better than the Vikings. (This is a valid statistic that I have researched intensely and has nothing to do with the fact that I grew up in Wisconsin and my parents would disown me if I ever supported any other team.)

If you go to Lawrence you had BETTER root for the Vikings.

Because, of course, they are the Lawrence Vikings. ;)

Just to make sure that no one gets the wrong impression, I have never heard of any acts of violence on campus involving fans of the Packers, (Minnesota) Vikings, or Bears. Most of the students who have a preference for one of the three teams, prefer the Packers and simply pity fans of the other two. There are also plenty of students on campus, who just don’t care.
