<p>If you go to the Common Data Set for Buffalo <a href=“http://apb.buffalo.edu/facts/cds/cds2010.pdf[/url]”>http://apb.buffalo.edu/facts/cds/cds2010.pdf</a> Section C7 shows that GPA, Rigor and Scores are very important in admission (you’ll also see First Gen is only considered). The 25%ile for Scores (Section C9) is 1050 while the 75%ile is 1260. You’re in the middle but those scores are for the entire U. The engineering program may have higher stats. Also I have no idea about your GPA or class rigor, rank, recs or interview. Do the same analysis for Syracuse.</p>
<p>Given that your SAT scores are right in the middle of the 25-75 range, and Buffalo’s acceptance rate is pretty high, you should have pretty decent odds getting accepted there, as long as your GPA is reasonable. I’ve heard that the engineering program there is pretty good.</p>

<p>At UB, the engineering school will also review your regents scores, if you’re from NY, and will look at your math sequence. I believe they admit only a certain number of freshmen to engineering each year so it’s probably in your best interest to retake if you think you can increase your scores. <p>Not sure you would make a good engineer with only an 1150 SAT score, unless you did much better on math than CR.</p>

<p>My son is a freshman in engineering at UB now. Says the classes are TOUGH and he has to work WAY-harder than in high school. Also, required engineering course-load is 17 credits; pretty heavy when 12 credits=full-time student. </p>
<p>He was admitted into engineering with a 1160 SAT (520cr/640m) and a 3.3ish GPA. No APs but took college level Pre-Calculus and college level Spanish. He had some ECs but nothing super stand-out. Saw last year here on College Confidential that some kids with similar and sometimes even higher stats were admitted to UB but not directly in engineering. Admissions is obviously not an exact science but things worked out well for my son. </p>
<p>Your stats sound similar so that’s why I am sharing. If you think you can score higher by taking the SAT again and there is time to do it, then go for it. But if not, you should still have some good options.</p>
<p>FWIW, he had also applied in engineering and was accepted to West Virginia University (awarded a Blue&Gold Level 2 scholarship of $3,000 per year), and UMASS Amherst $3,500 per year Director’s Scholarship). Visited UMASS and while he liked it, he liked UB way better. And the family’s wallet liked UB better than UMASS out-of-state even with the $ offered. Never got to visit WVU as he really liked UB and decided to commit there. </p>
<p>He applied in engineering and was wait-listed (nicer than a rejection but. . .) at North Carolina State, a school I think you mentioned in an earlier post — a tough admit, especially to engineering and even more so if out-of-state because NC State has to take something like over 90% of its acceptances from North Carolina residents. He was also wait-listed at UCONN and SUNY Stonybrook. </p>
<p>Also, you may want to look into SUNY New Paltz for electrical engineering. My son did not apply because he was interested in civil engineering but he liked the school when we visited. Cute little town, “artsy” diversified students on campus, and only 90 minutes from NYC. </p>

<p>Hi Sk8rmom!! (Can you believe we now have juniors!!! We’ll have to meet up at graduation next year!</p>
<p>BFG- Yes, son is now a Junior at UB majoring in Aerospace and Mechanical engineering. The engineering program (as well as many sciences) at UB has a great reputation. IT is a tough program as stated above. There are few required classes outside of the eingineering curriculum. Son usually takes 18-19 credits a semester and they all require lots of work. </p>
<p>FYI- during the summer between freshmen and sophomore year, my son took 4 online classes (Eric community and Farmingdale) to take history, english and world civ 2, to get them out of the way. It did not lighten his class load, but maybe he will graduate on time. </p>
<p>Son opted out of honors program…to much work as it is. (My other son was in Honors Program at his school. Other than having extra work to do in the classes, and our praise, I don’t know how prestigious grad schools or employers look at this accomplishment.)</p>

<p>It’s interesting that you mentioned the extra classes you S took - mine did the same and has been taking classes year round since freshmen year, always at least 2 in the summer, and sometimes takes an extra SUNY online or WNY consortium during regular semesters. She has several good friends with engineering majors who were there over the summer too. It never really seemed to get her ahead either, but at least she’s staying on track for the 5 year program (which, naturally, now requires summer coursework). I think much of it had to do with scheduling difficulties and having so many pre-reqs and gen-eds to take, as she’s never had to drop or repeat anything. Probably not unusual for a large public school but definitely something to consider.</p>
