Well, I was thinking about transferring schools. I'm not really sure if I'd want to spend the next two years of my life at my current institution (got a bad vibe while I was there, didn't really fit in...at all). I was thinking about attending USC, but if it's an unrealistic choice I'd like to know. Since I wanted to join AFROTC and have missed the training between sophomore year & junior year, this kind of seems like the only reasonable option at this point (I'm entering as a junior at Cal Poly from CC).

Haha, well, I just remember reading somewhere that someone had done it for some type of engineering major a few days ago. That’s what peaked my interest (because they had a similar GPA).

There are Governor’s Schools and schools for the gifted where a 3.1 GPA might equal a 4.0 at a typical high school. I do not recall the particular post you mentioned. According to reports the average GPA of admitted freshmen students was 3.8. for the fall 2011 class.

For the transfer students who were admitted to SC in 2011 the average unweighted college GPA was 3.7. In that group 9, 611 students applied to transfer.

SC used a holistic method for admitting students. However, your GPA is lower than the average. Have you achieved in other areas which would make you stand out from over 9000 other applicants?

@Georgia Girl: I’m not sure where I found it. I was going through a lot of USC stuff because one of my friends recently got in and I remember scrolling through a thread reading quickly about someone with a 3.1 that got into some engineering program there. It wasn’t in this forum but somewhere else on this site.

No, I guess not. There’s not really a lot of opportunity for math major activities at a CC. I founded the Physics and Rocket clubs and led the fundraising efforts for the clubs. We built a rocket and launched it. I was in the honors program and was also a part of the honors society. I volunteer at a pet shelter. I’m in the process of doing more at the new CSU school I’ll be at by becoming a tutor for Calc and up/linear algebra, Rose Float, joining their honors math and physics societies, blah blah. I will probably end up becoming a private SAT tutor on top of this.

I was just wondering if this was a realistic option, but I’ll try my hand at some of the mid-level/low UC’s where I’ve been told I have better chances with a non-impacted major (only 3 UC’s I can transfer to now b/c of unit caps at others). I was more interested in USC’s AFROTC program more than anything else. I just kind of needed to gauge my chances here because I’d rather not waste money if I don’t have to.
