Does anyone have insight on my chances on get into JHU with how selective it is ?
According to PrepScholar, Johns Hopkins has an 11.5% acceptance rate, which is very low. The average GPA of incoming students is 3.92.
I do not know whether JHU admits by major. However, at least for many universities engineering is a tougher major than most in terms of gaining admissions. Also, engineering tends to be a tough major to complete the course work once you are admitted to a university. Are you intending to be an engineering major?
How were your grades in math classes, and in physics if you have taken it? These tend to be at least rough predictors of how someone is likely to do in engineering. Do you have SAT scores?
I would consider JHU to be a high reach for you. You will certainly want to be also applying to other universities that are easier in terms of admissions.
as a JHU alum, unfortunately, the policy is that JHU does not consider legacy at all. 3.2 GPA is definitely on the low side. Football isn’t too big at Hopkins (not like Lacrosse) but they may recruit – wasn’t my gig.
According to Johns Hopkins’ 2021/2022 CDS, 0.6% of the students accepted had a GPA lower than 3.25. That is 18 students from 2,972 who were accepted. However, only 81.2% of the accepted student submitted GPA.
That doesn’t mean that 0.6% of all students with that GPA are accepted, since we have no idea what the GPA of the applicants looks like. Still, it’s an indication that it is really unlikely that you will be accepted. However, it is not impossible.
To answer your question, yes, a student with a 3.2 GPA can be accepted to JHU. However, it is highly unlikely, and we do not know what the rest of their profile looked like.
CDS reflects data for enrolled students only. Regardless, a really small number below 3.25 GPA.
Someone should contact JHU re: the 81% GPA submission rate, hard to believe that’s accurate. Perhaps there are some international students and/or homeschooled students with outlier grading schemes they didn’t want to average in with the rest?
You sound like a great kid, with a really diverse set of interests, and you clearly are someone who can juggle a lot of balls - sports, part time job, music, entrepreneurship, and all that goes into making Eagle (Congrats!).
With @JHU, you’re looking at one of the most “grind,” intellectual universities around, and one of the few to eliminate legacy preferences.
If you were to be accepted, I think the likely route would be through football, but I get the sense you are not being recruited for football.
So, I’d suggest you look at other schools. What is it that draws you to JHU? What do you want to study?
