Can a B+ student get into CMU?

wgmcp, CMU follows a liberal arts model in its creative writing department. There is no graduate program. Hence why I imagine Pitt’s is ranked more highly. :p

I’m curious why CADancer thinks CMU is a reach (“but not impossible”) for this student? His GPA will be higher if he takes the 9 AP courses mentioned and gets those nice pt. bumps. If his mom is correct and his SATs are 2100, that sounds about right as CMU lists its average SAT as 2113. (Of course, it’s really too early to chance a 10th grader–too many variables to consider.)

so true… many a slip between cup and lip as they say…trying to keep him on track…sorta reminds me of olympics! lots of talent, but sometimes drive gets lost or injuries or just life steps in and there goes the chance…luckily kids here get more than one chance…there are many great schools and i am working really hard to balance suggesting looking at colleges with not encouraging one ‘favorite’!

Deenie2612 - well, it’s hard to say without the breakdown of that 2100. If you divide it evenly an assume a 700 on each section, a 700 on math will really not cut it for CIT, generally. That’s near the 25th percentile - hence my saying unlikely, but not impossible. If that scores is more skewed (e.g. better math), it might be fine. Hard to tell…
