Is this potentially "fatal" for chances?

How competitive is the school?

It depends on wether that C+ was in a prerequired class for your major. If it was then most likely it will impact your chances.

I am attempting to transfer to Cornell from Penn State. Would it be better for me to drop this class before sending out a “C+” on my midterm report?

No one can answer that question without knowing a lot more - what your average would be with and without it; what the class is in and how that relates to your major; etc etc etc.

Well, I could potentially raise my grade to a B if I get A’s on the next few assignments, including hw and quizzes. This is for an advanced math class, partial differential equations (laplace…etc.etc.). Currently I’m a math major, with a potential for double majoring in economics. Is it better to take a drop before doing any more damage? Remember, this would only be done to prevent a “C+” from showing up on my midterm report.

I’m applying to an Applied Math/Economics program at cornell. What should I do?

Yes, drop it.

@hmom5

could you please elaborate on why it might be a good idea for me to drop it? Because there are a couple of different takes on this issue since 1) if i drop and get accepted as a transfer, then it was worth it, but 2) if i drop and don’t get accepted, then i could have potentially screwed myself out of getting a B or B+ (since the semester is only half way through)

cant you jsut not report that one grade? some professors dont calculate grades until the very end, and some classes only have 1 midterm so that midterm might not even be yet.
so basically it might not be necessary to send in that individual grade…?

Life isn’t easy and we have to make tough choices. Hard to believe Cornell is taking transfers with C’s that are not guaranteed transfers. How badly do you want to get in? Then again, have you done a realistic assessment of your chances without the C? I’m assuming if you’re shooting for Cornell, a B is still a low grade for you.

I’ve done a realistic assessment, and I basically have a gist for what my chances might be.

Is there anyway that I can just omit the grade for that particular class and hope that they don’t care/notice?

A B would definitely be better than a C+, and if my professor does agree to bumping my grade up to a B, then I would not be hesitant at all in getting that written down in my midterm report. But basically I have till about next Wednesday to get this done, and about 2 classes until then. I don’t see my grade at a B, to be honest.

I really want to attend Cornell…but I don’t want to end up falling behind by dropping my math class

You know what the trade offs are, only you can make the call!

Speak with the prof.

I am speaking with him. In fact, he said that he would bump my grade up to a B if I showed him some good grades on the next couple of assignments and quizzes.

I have a meeting with him next week, and between that time and tomorrow, I have a total of 3 classes. This class is definitely not an easy one.

I think that I might be shooting myself in the foot if I drop the class in the instance that I am not accepted for transfer or nothing works out. Also, I am at risk for getting a C+ or something of that nature if this sort of thing keeps up for the whole semester. I think that getting a C+ on my record could really screw my GPA.

So all in all, I’m thinking of dropping this class if I don’t have a B on my midterm report by next Wednesday. What do you think?

^^ yup pretty much what i would do… :)
