I want to take a college class at my local community college for the summer in order to learn about one of my extracirricular passions. Since I am not a Running Start student and this class has no connection with my academics, would it be considered an EC?
Is it Vocational Ed? Do you want to learn welding or something?
No, it’s Early Childhood Education.
No. it’s an academic class.
So where would I list it on my college apps, since it won’t be on my hs transcript?
You have to request a transcript from the college in addition to listing it on your apps.
OK I’m a little confused on a couple of details:
- If I don’t do well in the class, can I opt to not include it on my app?
2)In which section of the Common App would I list the class?
3)Would colleges like that I took a summer community college class? - I’m trying to get into one of the Ivies. I’m already volunteering seven hours a day, five days a week as well as participating in an internship. Would it be too much to take a class as well?
- If I took a summer course I would still be considered a freshman applicant rather than a transfer applicant, right?
- It depends on your status as a student at the CC. If you are enrolled as an ‘adult continuing education’ student, not for credit, it might not count and you might not have to report it. Check this out with your guidance counselor in your high school.
and
- Yes it would be too much. Rather than piling activity on activity, use your time, creativity and initiative to do something unique and interesting with your volunteer work and internship. Do some research and analysis of your student population that might be of interest to your teachers or the school. Offer to take charge of some activity or function that would give you some insight into some other aspect of early childhood education. And ask for some recommended reading or get a textbook on early childhood education and read it. Brush up on your foreign language if it will help you to communicate with the children or parents of the population you are hoping to serve. And self-educating is an EC too.
There may also be on-line childhood education resources…check those out.
You can make this simple. First, a child ed class isn’t like taking astrophysics for a stem major. Or a class to replace a hs course . And you seem to be saying it’s a side interest. If it’s related to summer work, I think the description of the EC is more important. But if you have room, on the last line, you can say, as part of my interest in blah blah, audited X.
I don’t think you’re trying to pad. In fact, sounds like you may be the sort of kid who IS willing to lean sideways a bit. The Ivies won’t expect it on the transcript or call you a transfer. You have an interest and you pursued it. (Good.).
Agree to take a look at the summer responsibilities, see if you are just “doing” or can show some leadership. Are you working with kids now?
If all this were so rigid, kids could never take a summer class for fun.
If you are interested in this course, I don’t see any reason not to take it if it enriches you. It’s an academic extracurricular. Lots of kids pursue those during their summers.
