Can a high SAT math score make up for low SAT reading score?

I am thinking about applying for Engineering schools and I was wondering if let's say a school's average SAT score is around a 1350/1600 and let's say your SAT score is a 780 in Math, but a 590 in reading. Would the reading score hurt, or is it still okay if your total score is still a 1370/1600? My Writing score is 650 if that helps.

I have the same problem…hope somebody responds
mine is r - 570
m- 800

Engineering schools will weight the math score more heavily. However, for most colleges and universities the CR score is the more important factor in the prediction of college success. Some places even ignore the writing score as the test has been shown to be not very valuable in determining writing ability.

sns911 that is such a huge gap between those scores! Wow
