Can a high school student take a Math 32A(multivariable) in UCLA during school year??

Hello, I am a junior who is taking AP Calc BC this year.

The highest math course in my school is AP Calc BC, and my school officially offers Multivariable Calc thru online school, so I was going to take that course through online.
However, I heard many feedbacks from current seniors who are taking Multivariable this year thru online, and they all said that it is a really bad choice.
So I am planning to take it in either UCLA or SMC, but UCLA would be better choice for me since it is pretty close to my school.
I searched up Google, but I can only find “a high student taking a UCLA course during summer” not during “school year.”

So I was wondering if it is possible to take a Math 32A class in UCLA as a high school student during school year??
Do I ask UCLA?? I don’t know who should I send an email to…

Is it possible? Potentially. The avenue you want explore something called “concurrent enrollment” via UCLA Extension. See https://www.uclaextension.edu/pages/str/howtoenroll.aspx and look for “concurrent enrollment”.

Math 32A is a required class for many science and engineering majors, so that means it is going to be a large lecture class; maybe not the ideal learning environment, but on the other hand it means there probably is a spare seat.

Since you say you live close to UCLA, perhaps some of the counselors at your school have peers they regularly work with at UCLA admissions. You can contact Extension and try to arrange this on your own, but I’d start with seeing if any of the counselors at your school can help set this up with the help of one of their peers.

One caveat. If you take this class at UCLA, even while in HS, the grade you get will be part of your GPA calculation if you later attend a UC. I’m thinking you won’t just take 32A, but you’ll want to take a full year sequence. So if its going too fast or is too much work, drop it before the deadline so it doesn’t end up on your record.

Most high schools end at Calc BC; students switch to AP Statistics senior year for lack of alternatives. You may have a problem finding a section of 32A that has room for you & is available at a time that fits your high school schedule. Summer is your best bet due to scheduling. You are low priority at UCLA while in high school.

Take it at SMC…because they’re on semesters, if you take their multivariable calculus class (I think it’s Math 11), you’ll get credit for both UCLA’s Math 32A and 32B. I’m assuming that the case would be the same if you ended up going to another quarter-based UC school as well.
