There is no way that I can afford to go to Cornell. I have an EFC 0. Will Cornell give grants to cover most of my tuition/rooming/dining/books?

If your EFC is actually 0, then yes.

[Financial Aid Estimator | Financial Aid](Financial Aid Calculator | Financial Aid)

They will cover dorm, tuition, books, and a few “other” expenses if your EFC is 0. Look at some of their financial aid policies - they will essentially pay for everything. If you live off-campus, they will give you the cost of room and board in a check so you can pay your rent + expenses, which I think is around $9,000 to $10,000. So if you manage to live cheaper, you get to pocket the extra

Definitely.

yes my efc was 0 and i didnt have to pay for anything. i just have to work this summer (student contribution) and make 2440… (apparently thats the minimum)

I have a friend who had a EFC of 0. he got full rides to Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, and Berkeley

I’m not sure a FAFSA EFC of 0 is a guarantee of a full ride – they do ask for the CSS Profile also and if your family had assets that weren’t considered on the FAFSA you might get less financial aid from a Profile school.

Ivies love poor kids. THe idea is that if you become rich and prominent they can brag about their greatness. The rags-to-riches theme is always good for movies as well. :D

^ Really? I am a workaholic so I think I can work all summer so I don’t have to take out loans. I never did the CSS profile. The deadline approached a while ago. When I signed up I didn’t qualify for anything. I am assuming that it was too late. Do these Cornell grants also apply to out of state residents? Thank you for all the replies.

Lavender19, I would suggest you contact financial aid ASAP and inquire about the CSS form - it is required, but perhaps they will let you file it late. The financial aid office has been wonderful to work with so far and very helpful.

My daughter is just completing her first year, and we are not from NY state, so yes, they are very generous to out of state students as well. We don’t have a 0 EFC, so I can’t speak for that, but do contact their office directly ASAP if you are serious about attending - you may be in for a pleasant surprise!

lavender19- I may have exaggerated a little though I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you become a future president or something. But the basic point I made is true. Ivies generally give alot of aid to low-income families. Foe example, Columbia guarantees that families making under 60K (or 80K, cant remember) will not contribute anything to finance their child’s education, and the others generally do the same.

Thanks, I’m going to call Cornell and ask if they already decided on much aid I will receive. I have tuition deposits due soon for other schools so it’s critical that I know this information asap.

Okay, I know this a little off topic. I am considered a dependent student because I currently live at home. My parents refuse to fill out the noncustodial profile form online and their parental assets. Therefore, I cannot do the CSS profile without their information. So, now I think I am not going to get any fin aid because of their refusal. I want to claim myself as an independent, since I do support all of my expenses but where I live. Has anyone had this happen to them??? I e-mailed cornell and told them my situation but it’s probably going to be an “oh well, too bad” response >:/

Lavender, I’m puzzled. Are you a rising freshman? In that case you should have already heard back from Cornell on your financial aid package when you received your admitted student letter. Did you not fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile? In that case, you’re in trouble and need to contact the financial aid office ASAP.

Why are your parents not disclosing to you the family’s financial situation? That is not an excuse for not filing out CSS Profile, and not doing so will have serious consequences, such as in you losing 40k+ in aid per year. As for declaring yourself as an independent, try posting this in the financial aid forum, where you’ll likely receive more helpful response.

I also have to make 2440 in the summer. But there’s also a work-study program. Can you not do the work-study thing and just earn more in the summer?

And also, how many hours do you have to work to get the work-study money?

Why is this? Do you have a terrible relation with your parents? And do you live alone? This is a terrible situaiton because you’re gonna lose a ****load of money. sort it out quickly

Also, does anyone know what meal does the finaid cover? I was given a full ride.

wait, when it says student contribution, does the student actually have to pay for it?..I mean I’m working this summer and stuff but I’m not sure I can earn all of my student contribution part of the aid.

^ Actually I’m a transfer student. I cannot fill out the CSS profile because it asks about my parents assets. These are personal questions I cannot answer since they refuse to give me that information. Pretty much they think it’s a trap and Cornell is going to offer me a bunch a loans and put a lean on the house if something doesn’t go right(which is like the only thing they have). Also they have bigger problems with ny that I cannot discuss on here or with cornell.

@kiwi, technically no. It doesn’t really matter how you get the money, but they’re saying it’s something you should do.
And $2440 isn’t that much to make in the summer…

@captrick
i also got a full ride
the financial aid package comes with a green sheet outlining exactly what is used for what… you should have it

in my case it covered room and board as a double and meal plan as the traditional (10 meals). you can work the finances so that you can live in a single with the basic (7 meals) if you so wish (this is what i plan on doing)

Well I never received it in the mail. The only thing I have (after calling them) is an email that vaguely says that everything will be covered by grants and all i need to contribue is summer earning, but not the specifics about meals / rooms.

Maybe I should call again

I choose a quad, so would that leave more money for meal?
And isn’t Bear Tradition 14 meals? maybe you’re talking about Bear Choice meal plan.
