Hey guys. I am just asking this for my friend. She is now in a college that she doesn't like at all. She wants to go to UCB but she doesn't wanna wait till sophomore year to transfer..so she is wondering if it is okay to apply as a freshman and start all over again.

Yes. In fact, this is how UCB prefers the applicants to do; apply as a freshman instead of sophomore transfer even if you studied at a different college for a year.

Perhaps not formally, but really there is no clear distinction between freshman and sophomore anyway; plenty of people graduate in fewer years, more years, etc. Being a sophomore is more a function of how many credits you have coming in, and I think in reasonable cases you can often get a lot transferred over, but will still have to complete many requirements once here.

Nope. This happened to me as a freshman. Started out at a school I HATED, and applied to Cal as a freshman. I was rejected because the moment you accrue any college credits (outside of things like community college courses taken during high school), you become ineligible to apply anywhere as a freshman.

Cal also ONLY takes 3rd year transfers.

If your friend hates where she’s at, she can do what I did and attend a community college for 2 years instead of wherever she’s at. The tuition is cheaper and your chances of getting in from a CC are SUBSTANTIALLY better than your chances of getting in from another 4-year.

^I don’t think that’s entirely true. I just met someone who transfered after one year from another college into Cal. Perhaps he’d gotten enough credits to be considered a junior transfer thought (meaning he’s graduating 2 years after coming to Cal). I do know that other schools will accept you as a freshman applicant, my cousin hated her east coast school so much she applied to a private school in Seattle as a freshman to start over.

@mkapur: Yup, that is exactly what my friend has on her mind. She is gonna give up her credits she has earned in that school and starts all over again…if she can get in Cal

There are some things that once done can never be undone. Losing your virginity is one of those things, and taking courses at a college or university after graduating from high school is another. One can not simply give up credits already earned at one college and apply as a freshman applicant to another college.

Once she enrolled in her current school she foreclosed the option of ever applying anywhere else as a freshman. She does not like the college she chose to go to and now basically wants to take a “mulligan” on the whole college admission process. While “mulligans” are sometimes allowed in friendly golf matches, they are never permitted in college admissions and she is going to have to live with the consequences of her decision for at least one year.

applications ask you to list ALL college coursework and eventually to supply transcripts. Failing to disclose these is an offense that can result in being ejected from the new university
