Can a subject test make up for an SAT score?

Can a great score on the Math II subject test make up for a less great score on the math section of the SAT, or should I just retake the SAT?
(Note: I was very happy with my reading and writing sections, so that is the reason I am reluctant to take them again)

If you’re applying to schools that use a less holistic approach (big state schools come to mind) you should retake the SAT. This is because many of these schools will look at GPA and SAT first and if the GPA and/or SAT doesn’t meet the requirements they will simply toss the application and look no further. They won’t get the chance to see that your SAT II makes up for your math SAT score. If the college your applying to uses a more holistic approach they will look at the whole application before they make a decision and see that your SAT II makes up for your math SAT score.

Maybe I should clarify…by “less great score” I actually meant a 700, so not bad by any means! I’m mostly talking about top schools, especially Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth, and Princeton. (If it matters, my Math II was a 780.)

Actually, your scores correspond pretty well. 780 on the Subject Test is the 83rd percentile.

I think you’re probably fine without taking it again. Your scores are strong. Those schools are going to be much more interested in what else is interesting about your application.
