Can a subpar gpa be made up for by other areas?

Minus senor year grades, I predict my uw gpa will be anywhere from a 3.6-3.7

I know, I know, its pretty bad. But I've taken the most rigorous courseload, have a 2300+ sat, and 750+ sat IIs, and what I believe are impressive ECs with plenty of leadership + nation wide awards. I also have had experiences that I'm sure will make some amazing essays. Because class rank is based on weighted grades as well, I think I'll make the top 10%.

Obviously, I'm going to work my butt off to earn as high of a gpa as possible for the rest of junior year, but will such a low gpa automatically rule me out for Brown, my dream school?

Why is it low? Is it just because the classes are hard or are you lazy?

I think it might be a bit of both? the rigor of my classes have also gone up considerably throughout high school for me. Freshman year I didn’t care much about school, but was taking mostly average level classes and managed A’s and A-'s. sophomore year was my first time taking all honors and earning a few b+'s. and of course, junior year the the first year my school allows people to take APs…I’m taking four and it’s taking a toll on me, although I’m doing my best and will end up with a better uw than sophomore year at least.

Brown, among the lowest admit rates – weighs your transcript first and foremost. It’s tough for anyone applying there and any blemish can be and often is, fatal. However your SAT and continued rigorous coursework should serve you well and come April 2014, I’d bet you have a good selection of “admits” to choose from if you apply wisely. Also make sure you have the “money talk” w/your parents. Good luck

also wondering if senior grades factor into the gpa they see at all?

any other input?

Your GPA is relative to your school. A year ago I posted a thread asking some what similar question for my S. he had around 3.6. School had not given us the gpa then but we were figuring out where to apply etc. his school also seemed to have a grade deflation. He had three or four b pluses and it seemed his gpa went down to 3.6. But however when the school gave us the transcript before the senior year his gpa was in the mid of top ten percentage. It didnt show unweighted gpa. He got accepted into some selective programs this year. So hang in there. Keep doing what you are doing now, focus on your interests, you will get into good programs. I would also suggest you apply to wide range of colleges. Best of luck to you.

Your 3.6+ won’t rule you out. I’ve seen (few) people get in at brown with similar gpa’s. that being said, grades are the most important aspect of your application according to numerous admissions officers at highly selective colleges. Of course, aim to do as best as you can for the rest of the year and if you are not applying ED, do the same for the first semester of senior year, showing an upward trend.

duly noted, thank you. So do senior grades even factor into the gpa they see? or is it simply sent as a new set of letter grades for them to take into consideration>

Depends on your particular high school, but mine recalculated my gpa with my 1st semester grades

If you are not applying ED or EA the school will consider your mid-year grades.
