My son was accepted as a Materials Science and Engineering major. He is thinking he wants to do something more broad, like Mechanical. Can students make this change pretty easily? I realize the first year or two is probably very similar.
Yes but… If he is currently a Materials Science Engineer major he could apply for some scholarships.

Thank you. We did receive information on the scholarships. It would be nice to get something, he didn’t make the cut for the big merit scholarshops. I suppose if he got one he would lose it at the time he officially changed his major. He is interested in materials, he just isn’t sure right now that is the degree he wants to pursue.
MSE is a broad degree, and MSE students do work ME jobs. Another perk of MSE is that since the department is really small, everyone is really responsive to students’ inquiries and the administration is definitely likely to know you by name
