So if i send two ACT scores, can I send one ACT score without WRITING and one with writing? that's what i thought for a looong while and the last time i took act i got a 35 composite but writing wasn't included... but today someone told me that that's not true and top tier colleges such as harvard won't even let you submit the ACT score without writing at one sitting.. i think that's bullcrap. if that's true, i'm really in a very bad situation and i'm about to panic :P Does anybody know the answer to this? whether you could submit act scores without writing at one sitting to top tier colleges

Anyone know the answer to this?!

I think that it would look really suspicious… What was your other score?

varies per school. Yale won’t take it, but Harvard told me they would IF i send one with writing and another without

My D had a similar issue. She took the ACT with writing once, and was satisfied with her 10. She felt like she lucked into a topic that she had quite a bit to say on. She wanted to take the main test again to raise those scores. She we emailed admission of several schools and all were fine with it, as long as she sent them the results of the one with the writing as well as the second one without the writing (and hopefully improved composite). They just wanted to see that she had taken it. And these were all schools that said they did not “superscore” the ACT. It sounded like they didn’t really consider this as superscoring. However, these were not Ivy League…“competitive” schools but not Ivy League. So you will want to confirm this with the specific schools in question. (W&M said they didn’t even require the writing at all on the ACT!)

@dtchgrl can you tell me what schools were fine with it? I am applying to colleges and its hard to contact every single one about this issue. Heres what i have so far

Won’t take it
Boston University
Yale

Will take it (send a score with and without writing)
Harvard
Brown
Northwestern
Univ of Chicago (didnt contact but they superscore so it most likely won’t matter)

Just a suggestion, maybe we should create a list since this question pops up every year and there is never a direct answer for each school

Thanks dtchgrl!!! Yes, can you tell us which schools told you this?

U of Chicago won’t even look at the essay score.

William and Mary said it was fine, in fact they didn’t even require the writing with the ACT.
Va Tech, Villanova, U of South Carolina all said that the better score w/out the writing would be accepted, as long as you also send in the results from the time you took the test w/writing portion. One of them, can’t remember which, further elaborated and made a comment something like “we just want to see that you took it” or “we just want to see that you can write” leading us to believe they did not put much weight in the score anyway…they just needed to check off a box.

What the ****, this isn’t fair, I too writing the first time an got a 10. I was satisfied with the 10 but not the 28 composite. I took the ACT again without writing and got a 31 composite. I just took the ACT again yesterday and am hoping for better. I am gonna apply EA to Yale, are you saying the 31 composite won’t even matter? And Yale will look at the 28 only? That’s not fair…

@FutureDocSauve Like I said in my earlier post, Yale told me that they won’t take a score that has no writing…It wasn’t really direct answer but it seemed like they implied it when I asked them about the no writing they said the don’t superscore ACT scores. The one you took on Sat. did u take writing?

Here is a combined updated list with mine and dtchgrl’s info included

Won’t take it
Boston University
Yale

Will take it (send a score with and without writing)
Harvard
Brown
Northwestern
Univ of Chicago (didnt contact but they superscore so it most likely won’t matter)
William and Mary (dont even need writing)
Va Tech
Villanova
U of South Carolina

Yale told me they would look at my higher composites even if I didn’t take the writing as long as I send in my scores for the ACT plus writing and submit my higher composites( without writing) in the application. I can post the email they sent for clarification but I’d like to know why people said Yale won’t look at it if no writing was taken. The email from Yale says different.

Maybe they meant they wouldn’t take just tht score if no writing was taken. If you send them a score with writing. And also the other scores, it seems you should be fine. I will call them tmrw and other schools to make sure that is correct. I will be able to add on to the list. I am really stressing out. The September one I just took did not include the writing… I’m ****ed about this. I feel everything I worked for went to waste.

I believe most will take both as long as you have atleast one writing score.

Some require it - some don’t.

Google “common data set” “name of school” 2012

Look in that info and see if the school requires it or not.

Would someone let me know if Yale, Princeton, rice, and johns Hopkins will accept both?

I found that you really had to explicitly and carefully word your question, and then make sure from their answer that they understood what you were really asking. I could tell with the first school we asked that they just gave a “canned” answer saying “yes we require the ACT writing”. We had to re-word and repeat the question making sure they understood what we were really asking.

@FutureDocSauve maybe it does have to do with the wording. The people who answer the emails probably have to go through hundreds if not thousands of emails a day so there probably rushing through them. Here is what they told me " Unfortunately, you cannot mix and match (or “super score”) ACT scores. We take the composite score with writing from any one test date." So i really dont know…

That was their reply when I asked if i can send a score from one with and one without writing.

future - I think you are just going to have to call or email, or both, and ask…perhaps more than once. To keep from getting a canned answer (ie, “we require ACT writing” or “we don’t superscore”), in some cases we had to carefully write out an example. SAy for example:

“If I took the ACT with Writing and got a composite score of 30, and then I took the ACT a second time but without writing this time (since I already had taken Writing) and got a composite score of 33, would you be able to accept my 33 as my highest score and still fullfil your writing requirement”

Then they seemed to get what we were asking, and they pretty quickly answered “yes, as long as you also send us the results from the the first time as well since that had the writing”

I talk to a lady from Rice and she said they took both
