Can an art supplement hurt an application?

The subject pretty much says it all. Can an art supplement only serve to bolster an application, or can it also be a detractor?

I think if its something good it will help, if its something not so good wont hurt or boost, if its too much and annoying perhaps hurts ;)

I sent my art supplement to the college I applied. From my perspective, although my works are not pretty good, it may serve as one of the contributing factors. The ability to do some fine arts can let admission officers understand you more precisely. Art supplement is one of your brilliant points.

There was a book written about a decade ago by the former head of admissions at Stanford, “Questions and Admissions: Reflections on 100,000 Admissions Decisions at Stanford”. She wrote that when they received submissions like this, the adcoms didn’t have the expertise to evaluate them so they’d send them over to someone in the relevant department (art, music, etc). According to that, if the supplement wasn’t helpful then no notation was made in the file that something was submitted. Not sure if all schools do it that way, but its one reference point.
