Can an SAT II foreign language test replace the requirement for HS classes?

A friend of mine asked if I would share this query with you smart people:

"Can a HS student take the SAT II test for a foreign language and (assuming she does well) use that test in place of the normal 2 or 3 years of HS foreign language classes most universities require for admission? My daughter's German teacher says yes, and her daughter, who is a HS freshman now and is fluent in German, will take that test later this year and be done with foreign language as far as universities are concerned. ... I just don't know that I can take my teacher's word for this. Undoubtedly this question has come up for countless others, hopefully people on your message board have addressed this? Thanks for anything you can pass along!"

It depends on the schools.

For California public universities, the answer is yes, according to <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; and http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/AdmissionHandbook.pdf</a> .

For other schools, you need to look on the web sites and/or ask the schools directly.

Thanks for your reply!
