Can any parents help with my list? B student.

I second the motion for you to investigate Questbridge scholarships. You apply quite early (August/mid Sept) but the process will help you get ready for your other applications.

Start a folder now for each school that interests you. On the outside, write important info – like the name of the admission officer who was nice to you or your log in name or a list of the things you need to submit. It really helps to get an organized system early.

Talk to your Guidance Counselor – ask where other kids like you have gone from your school. She/he may be able to put you into contact with last year’s seniors or those from two years ago and you’ll be able to email/talk first hand with someone trying some of the area schools.

All of this takes time and effort. There will be many times when you won’t be sure just how something is done. (That’s half of College Confidential’s reason for being! You are not alone!).

It sounds like you have an open mind and a pragmatic mindset. Those plus your early start will serve you well. Be relentless. I’m rooting for you!

I’m sorry that JMU isn’t an option for you, that was my first thought. You don’t owe anyone a reason. College is a very personal choice. VT math sat low range is 600. Their avg. weighted gpa was 3.9 last year. An average is just that, an average. Some were 4.2 and I’m sure a few 3.4 in the mix. What is the possibility of retaking either of the classes you did poorly in online this summer? Wiping out one of those could give you a bump. Your first semester grades will be very important. If they are better than prev. it is considered an upward trend which helps the sting of those earlier grades.
NC State is a great school. If they have agreed to meet your finances without dept, that is an awesome way to go! You are a good candidate there. Even given the choice of VT I don’t think I would go into debt to go over NC State. Depending on how far from home you want to be, check Alabama. They give good OOS aid.
