I am an international student from UK whose A Level results are not upto the mark :( what does the scholarships depend on and what SAT scores do I need to achieve? Can anybody please let me know which universities give away need-based scholarships for international students?

It would be easier to tell you which schools do NOT give need based scholarships.

Your thread title and your post don’t exactly go together.

If you want to know what stats YOU would need to get significant merit or need based aid as an international student, I’ll try to answer that.

For need based aid, if you need a lot of financial aid, you would probably be attempting to get accepted at the colleges which guarantee to meet full need for all accepted international students. That number is very small, and your stats for acceptance would need to be very high…close to a perfect HS GPA, extremely high SAT or ACT score, outstanding letters of recommendation. Even with that, less than 10% of applicants get accepted.

For merit aid, again, your stats would need to be tippy top. That is what merit awards are about…scholarships for tippy top applicants.

Now…keep in mind a couple of things. Some colleges do NOT extend merit or need based aid to international students at all. AND some colleges are need aware for admissions which means your ability to pay to attend is considered when your application for admission is reviewed.

Lets just say I have mediocre GPA and good SATs. Shouldn’t I search for need based scholarships? @thumper1

Few schools give need-based aid to intls. These are the top schools that are highly selective…they pick top students. You are from the UK, where the US gets plenty of applicants.

You’re not likely going to get accepted to any US schools that give need based aid to intls.

there are a gazillion kids like you. therefore the best get selected to the schools that give aid to intls.

How much will your family pay each year?

probably $5000 per year @mom2collegekids

$5000 a year won’t pay for your room and board for a year here. It sounds like you need a huge amount of financial aid to attend.

If you don’t mind posting…what are your SAT scores and GPA. Folks here might be able to give you some suggestions.

But I will say…as an international student, your application for admission will be reviewed along with all the other highly competitive international students.

Do you have a Plan B of schools in the UK?

ya :-S I am not familiar with the GPA system, A Level grades are AAAB. SAT scores 2200+. Yes I have a plan B but I am not satisfied with it. Moreover, I have already invested a lot behind SATs and TOEFL. I have 3 subject tests (SAT 2) as well. @thumper1

It sounds like your grades are fine. But getting a FULL ride including room and board will be a challenge. It’s a challenge for EVERYONE!

I am also planning to take up some jobs if possible. Should I go ahead with the US plan? My A Level grades may fall as these were my AS grades, A2 grades will be available in August. @thumper1

You are from the UK and had to do toefl? why?

what are your exact SAT scores…include breakdown from your best actual seating…not a guess for a future seating.

You cant work much here.
