Wooster is one of my top picks, I'd just like some more info on it please.
It could be anything from academics, social scene, how it prepared you for graduate or professional school or a job, professors, study abroad...anything. Also if there's anything about the psychology program. I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

my D is a recent grad and did well and had a good time. Her boyfriend was a pysch major and went into the ed field after graduation. Wooster offers good academics, good prep for grad school and careers with a little less stress than some of the top LACs. Facilities are good and the music program is especially strong. The town itself is decent. Wooster also tends to be a reasonable financial deal, especially for upper middle class families.

Hi there! My D is a rising sophomore at Wooster and is a Neuroscience major (lots of Psych). If you have any specific questions feel free to IM and I will get them to her to answer for you.

I am a little biased here, but I think the best part of the Psychology program are the monkeys I visit every time I am on campus. They are treated very well by the students and are adorable.

My only other input is - when D was on campus for a scholarship weekend trying to make her final decision they had an IS fair where seniors were discussing their required Independent Study projects. I was very impressed by the Psychology students and their projects, both women presenting were going on to prestigious graduate programs.

I have attached a link to the Psychology Department IS handbook from the Wooster web site.

Good luck!!

My daughter just graduated from Wooster. It was a life-changer for her. She’s now in the “Teach for America” corps in Houston, along with a slew of graduates from Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. :)

Congradulations to your daughter, Hindoo. Teach for America is a wonderful program. We have a friend in the program who was placed in New Orleans and is extremely happy with her decision.
My daughter is a rising junior at Wooster and has nothing but praise for the school, both academically and socially. I would also describe it as life changing. The only weakness we have experienced is they are sometimes a little weak administratively, but certainly not enough to affect the overall experience.

Wooster is one of my top picks, I’d just like some more info on it please.

Academics: Academics at Wooster are unparalleled at schools of a similar caliber. You spend less time in class than most of your friends from high school, but make up for it in the amount of homework you receive. The teachers care about you and want you to succeed. I was a Political Science major and it was just an amazing department: many of them are Fulbright Scholars, and the heads of the PoliSci and IR programs are some of the smarter people you’ll ever meet. My roommate was a Psychology major and really enjoyed her time there – especially the monkeys which she also got to work with. Kauke and Morgan (the PoliScie and Psych buildings) are two of the nicest buildings on campus – going to school in Kauke is like having class in a Barnes and Noble, just so cool. It is a life-changing experience, and gives you a chance to find out who you are and really spread your wings.

Social Scene: I’ve never met more down to earth people than at Wooster – most of them are kids who didn’t get AMAZING grades in high school, but it was due to boredom, not because they weren’t smart. As a result they’re very chill and love to be involved in multiple clubs. The party scene is pretty limited to on-campus since there aren’t too many night hangouts to speak of. The town of Wooster is okay, it has it’s charm but can feel small – but the college knows this and brings and hosts entertainment for students on weekends.

The Future: Wooster does an EXCELLENT job of preparing you for grad school/post-grad programs (Teach for America etc.). Your I.S. (Independent Study) is looked very highly upon: despite not being a University, the I.S. gives students an edge on research experience that Grad Schools are looking for.

That being said, I transferred out of Wooster midway through my Junior year because I think it does a sub-par job of preparing you for a job outside of academia without a) serious connections within your family to secure a job out of school or b) living in a big enough city that you get internship experience during the summer. I had a quarter-life crisis about finding a job and realized that I would have absolutely no chance against a student going to school in Washington DC who could do 3 internships a year for four years – because I’m from a small town and was only going to work retail/customer service during the summer. The career center is not as impressive as I’d like it to be either. Just make sure to get internships in your field every year, and you’ll be able to avoid the heart attack I had.

Study Abroad Wooster has an impressive study abroad office – and a vast majority of students go. You can choose from one of their programs or design your own as long as you can get it approved. The only thing is, you can only study abroad once during the school year, and once during the summer because of the need to take Junior I.S. (Research Methods) and then write your Senior I.S… So most students go abroad the second semester of their sophomore year, or a semester during their Junior Year. If you’re looking to spend a year abroad, this may not be the school for you.

Hope that helps! It really is an awesome place.

Thanks everyone! This info was great.

I attended graduation earlier this year. Very pretty, well kept up school. Town was a little dull and lacking, with mostly chain fastfood places and I didn’t even see a supermarket. But I ate at a great bakery/restaurant on the main street there which would have been equal to almost anywhere.

I didn’t see anyone mention it, are you aware of the thesis that everyone at Wooster has to write to graduate?
