The link will direct you to an image of my school's scatterplot of results for Penn State University Park campus.

My problem is that I was denied acceptance to University Park and was deferred to a second choice campus(Abington). Initially, people were making claims that Penn State(UP) has just increased its standards and they're tying to make up for enrolling too many people last year. I was fine with that, seeing as my gpa isn't all too great and knowing that PSU does put a lot of emphasis on gpa.

However, the plot proves that this wasn't entirely the reason in my case. People with equal gpas/lower sats and lower gpas/lower sats have gotten in. I am the big red circle with the X in the top right hand corner. AND I also applied pretty early(mid-october).

So what gives? Has anybody experienced something similar? This just all came as a surprise since I was really interested in attending University Park and thought I had a relatively good chance of getting in.

First off, what was your major? Some majors are a lot more competitive than others. Also, PSU supposedly counts GPA twice as much as SAT score. You really shouldn't have put down a second campus, because then they wouldn't have had the option of placing you at a satellite. I got rejected from Smeal with a 1210 and a 3.7uw/3.9w. I'm kind of annoyed, but there are always other options. If you're really ****ed, try calling admissions. Good luck!!!

You might ask your guidance counselor to call to get some idea about what happened, if Penn State fields calls like that.
If not, I would make a trip myself and ask to speak to someone in admissions who could go over your ap. with you. I'd even show up at their door with time on my hands to connect up with someone without an appointment if they don't give one.
A squeaky wheel who warrants admission would likely get it. I can understand the attraction to Penn State, but they are not giving out the Nobel Prize either.

Wow, did you seriously get not get into main? I'm so sorry. I have similar stats, and I got accepted within two weeks of sending my application. I know people with MUCH lower stats that were accepted.

With your GPA and applying in mid October (which really was not early) you were a long shot at UP. Your SATs are likely what got you into a branch.
They do not really take all the lower stat kids and put them in the branch campuses; they mix them up a bit.

Sagarmatha; I'm sorry about your rejection from UP, but I'm wondering why you're asking this question to a bunch of strangers, who basically know diddly (for lack of a better term) about PSU's admissions criteria. Why not go straight to the horse's mouth?

Like Dani, I know of kids who have requested a review of their PSU admissions decision and ended up being offered summer session instead of being sent to another campus. It's definately worth a shot. The worst that can happen is that they say no.

GPA and SAT scores are only one of the factors of admission. There's essays, teacher recommendations, ECs, and other factors. This should be obvious.

Birdkille: PSU doesn't require nor do they accept teacher recs. There's only a GC rec form completed online. Essay requirements are minimal (only short answer questions).
