can anyone explain to me how the warren GE works?

Lets say I'm an engineering major, that means I need two area studies. One area study must be from Humanities and Fine arts, and the other area study needs to be from social sciences? Correct? That means I cannot choose, for example, Literature and Music as two of my area studies because that is in the same category?

YEAH i need help with this too. im an engineer gion into warren as welll

What chuckster was correct. You can’t take two Area Studies under the same category.
There’s a list on UCSD somewhere listing the different studies in each category.
Just remember that you have to take 1 lower-division course in each of the two Area Studies and 2 upper-division courses in the two studies each.

wait so is it like basically having 2 minors?

@silvercrystal

Isn’t it that you just have to have at least 2 of them be upper division? So couldn’t you have all 3 of them be upper division… if somebody wanted to?

@hyunmi

Area studies are 3 classes and minors are 7+, so not really.

@KingsElite:
I guess so… o_o not too sure about that… but that does make sense.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread but…

For area studies, do the classes need to be the same? Say for Humanities/Fine Arts, can i take a lower division course in music and two upper division courses in philosophy. Would i be done with my AS or do they all need to be one subject?

Yes, you can, so as long those classes fall under that particular AS. They don’t all have to be in one “subject”.

Okay. Thanks. Is there a list of all the classes i’m eligible for? I only see these categories, but i dont know what some classes are.

Classical Studies
Foreign Language & Culture*
History
Humanities*
Literature
Music
Philosophy
Theatre and Dance
Visual Arts

@AndrewL

Physalis is wrong. It either needs to be from one department or be a specialized AS. You can essentially pick any 4 unit classes from a department if it’s not specialized.

Thanks for correcting that. Looking at the advising handbook, it says this.

“Humanities
Any combination of three courses, two of which must be upper-division, from History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theatre and Dance, or Visual Arts. Each course must be at least four units. Linguistics/Language courses are not allowed.”

So humanities basically a combination of the other departments correct? I can take one class from history, one from literature, and one from music?

If on the list i posted above DOESNT have an asterisk, i need to stay within the department correct?

^Yep. 10char

Sorry, seems like I mistook Humanities/Fine Arts as a AS instead of the of two disciplines. Still, as long as the classes you’re taking fall under that particular AS, they don’t have to be in one subject/dept.
