Can anyone from NY help?

I'm currently a 10th grader at a NYC high school. I'm not doing anything after school and would like to do something "worthwhile" with my time. If you know of any internship, program, or volunteer opportunities, please let me know by either posting below or just PMing me. Everywhere I look for a job or for volunteering, they say no as I'm either too young or they have enough people :(

It really all depends on what you want to do.

Let me give you an example: I live in westchester country (which is like 20 minutes away from the city). This summer I interned at Weill Medical Center of Cornell/ NY Presbyterian (that was part of my science research class). I worked in the pathology department and I got like 150 hours from it. I’m planning on competing in some science fairs so I’ll be going back there again. I got lucky, I had a friend who gave me the hookup with the doctor who ran the lab. That being said, I turned 16 last july so I probably was old enough to work.

What i’m trying to say is that you can get into places like this as well. Plenty of labs/hospitals are looking for volunteers. Lennox hill hospital has a volunteer department you can call. If you’re interested in research, find a specific kind of research that you like (i.e cancer research, pathology, ect. ect.), find a research center in the city (like there are plenty on york avenue-rockefeller, sloan-kettering, NYU, Columbia, ect., then just contact the head of the department you’re interested and talk to professor/doctor who runs the lab.
you may be limited by you’re age but I’m sure that they would be happy to take you during the summer.

The same goes if you’re interested in finance, law ect. The best part about NYC is that you can find ANYTHING if you look for it diligently.

Thank you! I really appreciate the help. Well, I’m REALLY interested in finance (want to be a trader or banker on Wall Street after college), do you know of any opportunities in the finance world?

bump .

hmm. well i’m not familiar with anything in the finance world, even though one of my parents works on wall street. but i’d just try to call up some HR departments at some small firms (maybe hedge fund) and see if you can mirror someone. i can’t really give any good advice though. what i can tell you is that you definitely should try to get some sort of business experience. if you can’t find an internship, maybe you could dabble in the stock market :)

Thanks. Yeah I have a HUGE LIST of small firms that I can tap into. Im already trading (I trade currencies) so I guess that might help me out. Anyways, thanks for the help, appreciated.

Not sure if that’ll help.

I think you have the right idea. For finance, it really has to be through connections or at a small business.
