Hello,
I’m a non-traditional college student currently finishing up my GE’s and major classes. I attended a four year university straight out of high school, but due to many reasons—my immaturity, mainly—I ended up getting disqualified with a 0.308 GPA. Now, as mentioned before, I’m a community college student who’s almost ready to transfer. I have a 4.0 GPA, and if I average that out with the GPA I received at my first college, it comes out to about 3.3.
It would be a dream to transfer to UCLA or UC Berkeley, but, thinking realistically, I probably have no chance. I worked on and off during these years, I volunteer at Church through homeless outreaches, disadvantaged youth outreaches, and take care of a family member’s child sometimes. Looking at it objectively, I don’t seem competitive at all, and the only thing I have going for me is the upward rise in GPA, which is something I’m sure most transfer students have as well.
Can anyone give me their honest opinion on whether I should even bother applying to UCLA or UC Berkeley? If I only have a meager chance, or worse, a nonexistent chance, I would rather not even bother. But if I do apply to UCLA and UC Berkeley, and I don’t get in to either of them, I plan to apply for the TAG (transfer admission guarantee) program for UC Davis.
For ease of view, and to save everyone from reading all of that, I’ll list my relevant stats:
First university GPA: 0.308
Community college GPA: 4.00
Average GPA, or cumulative: 3.34
Extracurriculars: sporadically employed, volunteer at Church through homeless outreaches and disadvantaged youth outreaches, take care of family member’s child
Intended major: Japanese
Preferred college(s) of choice for transfer: UCLA, UC Berkeley. UC Davis if both don’t work out
Thank you in advance to anyone who reads my post and/or responds!
