I already posted this in the international students forum, but i'll post here again just in case anyone else might have the same question..

Hi, i'm an international student from South Korea.

Korea's fiscal years follows the calendar year so that's (jan. 1~ Dec. 31).

i have my figures for the tax return of last year (2012), but not for this year yet.

In the CSS profile, I'm asked this Question:

Has the student completed an income tax return for the 2013 tax year?

and here are my answer choices :
1. completed an income tax return
2. will file, but has not completed an income tax return
3. not required to, and will not file an income tax return

which answer choice should I choose? the third one? or the second one providing the estimate value of my income tax return of year 2013?

If you WILL be filing a 2013 return but haven’t yet done so, pick number 2. That is what that means. It indicates that you WILL be completing a 2013 return (FYI, no one here in the states has done their 2013 return yet either), but haven’t yet done so.

And then, yes…you complete the Profile with your very best estimates for the 2013 tax year.

This is exactly what every student completing the Profile now is doing…indicating they WILL FILE if indeed they will be filing a 2013 tax return. Tax returns for 2013 in the united states won’t be filed until February 2014 by most people. Your situation isn’t any different! Taxes are filed for the calendar year January 1- December 31.

i guess you’re right… thank you very much

but i’ve got another problem…
I registered my profile choosing the third answer choice, and now that i’ve completed the registration questions, it seems like I can’t change the answers I’ve chosen … do you know if there’s any way I can fix this?

I have no idea what to tell you. I thought you could change all the fields UNTIL you submitted the Profile. Did you already submit it?

If so, send an email to,the college board contact…and tell them you made this mistake.

there are two parts to the css profile, the first has to do with registering for the profile and the second has to do with completing the application (or the PROFILE).

I was talking about the first part, and it seems like I can’t make changes to the first part anymore now that I’m finished registering.

Yup, I guess i’ll send an e-mail and check with College board directly… Thanks :-)
