I am recently admitted to UCSC as a freshman and am trying to decide which of the 10 colleges best suits my personality. I am a serious male student (Caucasian, half Jewish though not religious), interested in engineering. I like to run, I eat healthy, and I don’t drink or do drugs, though I am not a geek. My main concern is to be around other people who do not do drugs, drink and party. I prefer a quiet dorm where I can study, without lots of noise or loud music. I want to meet people who are like-minded and academically inclined, yet friendly and fun. I have seen several posts describing the vibe of the 10 colleges, though many are several years old and presumably out of date. If there is anyone who is a current student or recent grad who can summarize the general reputation of each of the 10 colleges, it would be extremely helpful to me and other USCS incoming freshman. Thanks very much!
I’d like to know what dorm life is like too. Do they organize floor parties/theme nights and day trips for freshmen? I know UCLA does this especially in the beginning of the quarter. I’m not a partier and am more on the quiet side, but do like to have the opportunity to have something fun to do on the weekends etc. How accessible is downtown Santa Cruz without a car and other than the beach and boardwalk, what is there to do there?
@Traderfever I asked one of my friends who currently attends UCSC as a bio major and she said that activities there depend on the college you enter. Most computer science/biology majors dorm at Crown College. Porter and Kresge Colleges are the ones that are notorious for the whole 420 thing. There is a lot of walking involved as the campus is large and basically in the middle of a forest. @Maple47 Buses are typically what students use to get around, and there are a lot of clubs to be involved in! Floor parties/theme nights depend on, again, what dorm you choose.
I’d also like more information about the 10 colleges from a students perspective. What is each college known for and what is the general vibe?
Thank you for your info, what is “whole 420 thing” may I ask please?
LOL got it! thanks…
