Oh guys sorry for off-topic but I have a very urgent question !
As we all know, international students aiming for US colleges all have to sit for one of the most expensive tests: TOEFL. I took it on Jan 14th and due to some blasted things with the mailing system, I have just received it today. And since my score's release, I feel like hell
My overall score isn't bad ( more than 630 ) but the startling as well as crushing part is the essay score. My essay is just scored 4. This especially saddens me because this is the part I made the most careful preparation and even handed a host of my essays to several experienced examiners I know. They all said there was no need for me to worry cuz my essays were very good and that I would certainly garner a high score !
But you've seen what happened ! So my question here is does a 4 in the essay hurt your application ? And is it extremely necessary for me to re-take the test and earn higher score ( I am really in two minds cos 140 $ is a huge problem with me ) ? Anyone has experience in this stuff, please share your experience. I am in desperate need of your advice on this matter ( to tell the truth, I feel so upset right now :( )
Thankx a bunch ! ;)

it depends where you are applying ... for top universities, or the more selective ones, this can hurt you ... most colleges in canada ask for a minimum 5 to prove your proficiency. However, if you think you can do well on the SAT I CR Section, then u can get ur toefl waived.

Is that true , waleedk87 ? Another blow to me cuz actually I think I should aim for several selective liberal art colleges :(. So does your response mean I had better retake the test ? Is it essential ?
Nah, do you think that high score on CR can make up for the essay part in the Toefl ? Would you mind pointing out several top colleges, which waive the Toefl for inter student with good CR score ? I am compeletely disgruntled now :(. Thankx in advance.

lol. I didn't prepare and i got 5. & I always thought I am weak in essays.

hey rhett butler, i got a 4.5 in my essay but i wasnt satisfied at all with it. i didnt retake it because 140 $ are a lot even for me. But now i reggret it. Just think it this way. This 4 in your essay, along with some other stats that you may consider to be below average, could be one of the most decisive factors about the university decisions? So is it worth to put in danger your whole applications so much just because you didnt want to spend some more bucks for another test? Also it may influence in the fin aid package. Good scores can reise your fin aid package in a way that at last you will have earned from retaking the test and not lost. So i m not saying that you MUST retake the test, but just dont feel afraid of spending 1000$ more on tests and applications now, because you may reggret it later.

1000$. I can get myself an ipod + a digi camera.

I don't think tofel matters that much. It's more of a test to proof your proefficiency in the American English. As long as you hit >250, it doesn't really matter. Watch more friends and Csi if you intend to retake. :)

Thanks dudes ! I definitely got your point. Personally, I am in complete agreement with Olsi that we shouldn't be afraid of spending money on tests if essential, especially when it comes to so significant a matter like your future education. But the matter here is the TOEFL test I took was paper-based test, and supposing I retake, the test will be IBT. A huge problem ( I presume all of us there know how tough the new TOEFL is ). Hence, I heard somewhere that actually the Toefl essay actually doesn't count much because admission officiers often value the CR and writing section in the SAT I more highly. But only God knows whether or not this rumor is accurate :D
So, I will watch out and see if I really need to sit for it again. Thanks 4 your prompt response anyway, guys !!! Have you guys entered colleges or are you goin' to be senior like me ? ;)

dude toefl is a joke!
it was like a surreal game show ripoff thingy...the one i gave on the comp...don worry its juss a formality...sth u shud hav but sth thas not crucial in ur app process..i no this one guy who went to the us without the toefl..but they made him sit fr it there aftr he went in fr sum policy...don lose ur hair n money ovr this ****...as long as u did well in CR u got nuthin to worry bout...another thing since TOEFL is fr the intels who r obviously financially inferior to amaricans n the other english proficient countries...shudn it b cheaper than the SATS...where is the luv ppl?

Cornell, Northwestern, Bucknell .. the list is endless... but dont get me wrong here, but if you got a 4 on ur TOEFL Essay, i dont think you will do too well on ur SAT essay (i got a 6 0n the toefl and a 9 on the SAT).

pm it to me =)

pm it to me too ^ ^

what's this essay for? dont get me wrong, curently i think its for colleges that a junior would only apply to around 5 or 6 months from now ....

no i am reapplying next year. .. didnt get in anywhere in us w/aid
