<p>AlienWare Laptops are the best if you can afford them. I'm asking for one for graduation! Go to their website and check them out.</p>
<p>Alienware laptops are WAYYYY overpriced. If you really want a laptop to play games at full resolution/full speed go ahead and waste money on a gaming laptop. Any other high performance laptop will place games decently. You would probably be better off having a good laptop and a normal gaming desktop. Together those would probably cost less then a gaming laptop.</p>

<p>If you want to be a top end gamer, you WILL BE UPGRADING. You cannot just stick a new graphics card into your laptop to play a new game, you will have to buy a whole new laptop (and even then, the 3d preformance is not that great).</p>
<p>Also with the big gaming laptops, what you end up with is a giant laptop that you dont want to carry anywhere so it stays on your desk...get a desktop with an LCD and put the tower on the floor and BOOM same amount of space with less cost and better gaming.</p>
<p>It has already been stated that Alienware is overpriced and I agree. Check out Cyberpower or IBuyPower for some gaming laptops. Heck, you can even get the new Dell 6000 with Centrino M, 1 gig memory, 256 meg ATI video card (that's a PCIe card, not AGP, so it's fast enough), 60 mb 7200 HD for about $1.3-1.4k. For that price you can afford the desktop bigndude recommended and come in at about the same price as the Alienware..</p>

<p>Gaming laptops are VERY expensive. You'll be spending a lot on something that is not very upgradable and not powerful (compared to desktops) for the price you pay.</p>
<p>If you have the space, definitely get a desktop for gaming. Then if you really need a laptop, get a cheap one! All you'd need it for is web surfing, e-mailing, and word processing so you could get by with the cheapest model any company offers today (or you could get old/used/refurb models for even cheaper)</p>
<p>In response to macattak's recommendation: as far as I know, the best Dell Inspiron 6000 has is the 128MB (not 256) x300 video card. That notebook is my favorite of those currently offered, but it's not quite made for power-gamers.</p>

<p>If you are going to MIT, go with a powerful desk top for sure. Along with that, look for a local mom&pop computer shop that sells corporate lease return laptops and get something like an IBM Thinkpad T20-T23 which is great for laptop things.</p>
<p>For the desktop, even if you arent so great with computers, build one yourself. Find a guide online and if something goes wrong...you are at MIT, someone will be able to help. </p>
<p>I would reccomend buying everything from newegg and going with an Athlon-64 with at least a gig of ram (for other parts, check reviews/prices/personal needs at the time you buy). Depending what you buy and how high end you go (never buy the very top, always at least a step below) you can go pretty cheap. Even with top models, you should be under $2000 (thats for something way better than dell will ever sell) and if you look for deals and go with a processor thats a few hundred MHz slower etc, you could end up below 1000.</p>

<p>There's more than enough time, although you might not get that much sleep, I use a desktop(i also have a laptop for non-gaming and wireless connection to campus network) that I built from different components from newegg.com(you could get an insanely fast desktop for around a grand) and we have an internet connection thats really fast but its in MB/s range (an oc-3 connection I think) . If you dont know how to build a comp ask around alot of people know and could teach you. It doesnt take long to assemble from components ,about an hour.</p>

<p>except with a full athlon 64 it will suck your batteries dry and weigh a ton while making a ton of noise...at which point you might as well have built yourself a gaming desktop.</p>
<p>if you build a computer, you might want to look into zipzoomfly.com or monarch computersystems.com (newegg is starting to price gouge grrr...) if you REALLY want to game, athlon 64s are hands down the better choice. i really recommend building your own computer since it MUCH cheaper than anything else out there(around 1500 for a VERY high end computer) but if you don't want to, absolutely stay away from any computer that has celeron, or amd sempron. if asked for a motherboard(mobo), choose either DFI or Asus. as for video cards, BFG is one the best out there. for memory, look more for speed and low latency as opposed to size. look for a good network card(MIT has so much bandwidth... <em>salivates</em>). if you go to anandtech's pricewatch page, you can get some really good deals on components. that way, you can order a less expensive computer and get more for your money. pm me if you have any questions.</p>
